A TKitKIBLK talk FROM the
SEA
News readied New York on the3otb
ult. of the h as of the brig Harriet, near
Mistaken Point, N. F. where the ill
starred steamers George Cromwell and
George Washington were totally
wrecked some weeks ago. The 1 f >r
riet was hound from Liverpool to St.
Johns, N. F. On the 15th ul'. she
encountered a terrific hurricane off the
Grand Rank, in which her fore and
main top gallants were carried away,
together with a largo ijunruity ol can
vass and rigging gear. On the 17th
the hurricane continuing, the Harriet
lost her rudder and steering gear,
which left her utterly to the mercy of
the elements. On the 16th, after die
rhip’s company had suffered excessive
ly from the inclemency of the weather,
and shortness of food owing to the ex
ceeding length of the voyage, the car
penter, aided by several of the cr> w,
succeeded in attaching a sort of juty
jopder which they hoped would seive
him until they reached Cape Race.
All went well up to the 20th instant,
when the lookouts forward could not
kiii Ik m lie (tl n deck. The sea
as tunning veiy high, and it is ibe be
if of ti c only surviving hands that the
Harriet ran down a fi hing smack anti
that all on board were drowned, as no
truce of them could he Bern, though an
effort to bout ship was made in vain.
Early next morning the Harriet struck
twice, each limo with a trenuminus
crash, and all hands gathered upon the
main poop, while the vessel was I
going to pieces. Two sailors, Isaac
Wilcox and H: nry Boone, who were
alone rescued, slated that soon before
the mainmast keeled over they saw the
male, Robert Hall, and tho carpet ter
jump towards the rooks, doubtless in
tending to swim ashore. Two of the
sailors were praying when a limvy seu
washed one of them overboard. The
Captain clung bravely to the shrouds
to tiio last, directing the men what to
do. Wilcox and Roone lushed tliem
telvea as Lest they could to the main
mast, wliieb fell over without injuring
them They were swept by the waves
upon u dry sandy plot at the base <d
the curved plot, where they were for
tunately landed.
