LOCAL ITEMS.
FIRE.
About fifteen minutes to twelvo
o’clock yesterday the alarm of fire was
heard It was soon ascertained that
Dr. R B. Harris’s plnce was on fire.
When first discove-ed it was in the
kitchen, but before buckets and water
ooiild be had it was ton far advanced to
■save the buildings The place waa oc
cupied by D', C r. Latitncr; be suc
ceeded in saving everything in the
liou-e, but damaged to some extent in
the excitement getting them out. The
buildings was a total loss No insur
ance, J>r. Harris's loss is about cigh-t
hundred dollars. The fire originated
from the stove pin* where it went into
the flue, the Si tiling being t"0 clone to
the pipe.

Attempted Suicide.
On last Widnesdsy evening a negro
tby the name of Austiu Harris was ar
r<ated by Marshal Williams undi r a
-charge of stealing mouey from Mr
Norwood, by whom he was employed as
• a porter at the Altamaha Hotel. As
Mr. Williams was carrying him to the
lock-up to await bis trial, be walked ou
very peaceably, but whon they reached
'the lock-up, and while the Marehal was
trying to get the lock out of the staple,
in which it worked very tight, Austin
started off in a run. He ran ufsome
distance betore Mr. Williams could get
•the lock loose. Finding that ho was
*too far to overtake him he threw the
/lock at him, which just did miss bis bead.
The Marshal and our efficient Slier iff,
Mr. J. N. G udbread, who happened to
see the negto run, started in persuit of
diim. Au-tio finding inat he could not
out run Mr. G’s. horse made for a nc
agro house close by.
When be ran into the house be was
•asked what was the m itter, and be re
plied, “give me a loaded gun. Upon
being told that there was no gun in the
bouse he immediately took out his knife
and cut his throat. It b itg a small
pen-knife be did not succeed io killing
ihimself. He was carried to the office
of Dr. Latimer where his wound was
dressed Although be was very badly
-cut be is now mending rapidly.
