The Turkish squadron on the river 1 )anube is under the command of Kirit iee Mustapha Pasha, and consists of some seven armed gunlioatu and a few small wooden vessels armed with light guns. The iron-clad gunboats are all about one hundred and fifteen feet in length, carry guns (eight-pounders) in abatterv placed on thf forepart of the deck, and are pro tected wit.i two-inch armor. The re maining two are of very superior con struction, carrying their two guns (80 pounder Krupps) in a turret placed for ward. They were b"ilt at Constanti nople. Nothing is known as to whether the Roumanian authorities have con nived at the placing of torpedoes in the river on the part of the Russians, though doubtless the latter will have thought of it. The Turks at one time thought of having recourse to these weapons, and placing them at every point on the Dan ube at all suitable for crossing, but there is reason to believe the idea has been abandoned. However, the difficulty of crossing the river, owing to these gun- ImatH, has not been underestimated by the Russian government, and, with a view of paralyzing their action, and pro tecting the operations for throwing over a bridge, a number of small torpedo boats have been added to the equipment of the invading army. These boats are steam launches about thirty feet long, constructed, with the exception of one, ‘ which is of steel, of thin iion plating. , They are fitted with engines of eight-1 horse power, and possess great speed. Being speedily built with a view to tran sport by rail, they are exceedingly light for their size, jtnd do not weigh, with their engines and fittings all complete, more than three and one-half tons. They will probably lie fitted with the spear torpedo, and their crews will trust to their speed to carry them alongside iin enemy’s gunboat, and away from it again, before the Turks will have suffi ciently recovered their presence of mind t point a ptin correctly, or even fire one. As it protection against rille fire, these boats carry shields at each end, but there is nothing to prevent their being sunk by the fire of a great gun. Well maneuvered, under the command of hold and enterprising officers, these launches must become very dangerous to the Turks, and, in any case, are likely to prove a valuable auxiliary force, as they may be used among other purposes for enrryingover the advance guard. (>pce at the river, the Russian army will lie delayed until the bridge is constructed for the passage of (he main body. Ma terials for n bridge have been collected in abundance at the town of Ismail, on the Killa branch of the Delia, and in clude both pontoons and boats as well as tue necessary timber.—.V. Y. Tini'.-. The disclosure concerning Mr. Italy’s patronage of the spiritualists suggests a word about the good business that the mediums and clairvoyants of New York are enabled to do through the supersti tious credulity of men and women who occupy high social positions and even rank as persons of more than ordinary intelligence. It is no secret here that such persons habitually consult the mediums and clairvoyants alxiut im portant business atliiirs and are guided by the so-called revelations which they obtain in this way. There are mediums, both male and female, who make a regular clientage, If it may tx> so called, among merchants, professional men, speculators and others not lacking intelligence, and who make a very comfortable living hv supplying them with information which they (the dupes, of course) really believe comes from supernatural sources. It was only the other day that a stock speculator failed through operating on “ points” which a medium told him came direct from the spirit, of Commodore \ anderbilt. Kither the medium was a downright fraud, or the commodore is not so well jHwted in the other world as be was in this, tor the [aiints proved as unreliable as any that good old Daniel Drew ever distributed among the boys. It is even a common thing for some business men to consult theoraclcs before going into any large venture. lam told of one, an importer, whose outlay for spiritual information averages SI,OOO per year. Another makes it a rule not to employ an acwumaut. salesman or errand hoy without first finding out what the spirits think about it. i'hen there are lawyers t not many, l trust, but certainly s'niel who never try a case till a medium or clairvoyant has been consulted. The :ale ,TttJp> Kdmonds. as is well known, u. and to declare that spirits frequently apj-eared to him in court and put him in the way of getting evidence ot the greatest ini|K>rtauee. Many business failuies are eatised from time to time bv ovt r-tviifidence in mediums and their ’• \t latiotis. Our old triend Smith, the razor sirop man. who keeps a street stand near the sul*-treasury, was doing a prosperous trade in a fine store'on .irand -treot until spiritualism cot hold of him and drew him away from his business Mis not only the illiterate, byanymeans, on whom the sharpers of spiritualism and the humbugs of clairvoyance habitually prey. They have quite as many dupes on Murray Hill as in the quarters of the working classes, and they certainly get more money out of tha former than out of the latter. —New York Cor. Detroit Pros. Tilt: JILACK Si:A A ST) THE Hi-A OF AXO V. As the Black sea is again about to be come the scene of stirring events it is well that a clear understanding should be had | of the nature of that remarkable body of ! water. It is about seven hundred miles ! long' in its longest direction and has an extreme width of about three hundred and eighty miles, being three-fourths longer than Lake Superior and more than i twice as wide. Its depth is from four to forty-eight fathoms nearshore, but in the middle no soundings have been found at 1 one hundred and sixty fathoms. The greatest depth of Lake Superior is two ; hundred fathoms. The Black sea is not like our lakes, a fresh water sea, but on the other hand it | contains one-seventh lessjsalt than ocean ] water, and is held to receive one-third of ! all the running water of Europe. The j puzzle is what becomes of all this fresh water, and how the Black sea retains its ! salinity. The sea is tideless. There is no perceptible current toward the Med iterranean. It has the same level as the sea of Marmora. The outlet by the Bosphorus, even were there a strong cur rent, would be insufficient to discharge the immense volumes of water constantly I>ouring into the inland sea, and it scarcely seems credible that the evapo ration is sufficient to account lor the sui" plus water. Like our own lakes, it is subject to frequent storms, but naviga tion is not exceptionally unsafe, and an extensive steam navigation is carried on. There are several islands near the mouth of the Danube, but the sea is singularly free from rocks and shoals. The sea of Azov, which is connected with the Illacksea by the narrow strait ot Yenikale, is much smaller, being only about one hundred and sixty-eight miles long and eighty broad. Its waters are fresli and abound with fish, but aie very shallow, and fall off toward the west into huge marshes, which have been aptly named I’litridsea. It is of comparatively little importance for purposes of naviga tion, though it has several ports and roadsteads. All the shores washed by the Black sea have within the last decade made rapid strides in the path of material and industrial development. The entire Russian coast is annually growing in Imputation, wealth, and importance. Odessa chiefly exports wheat, tallow, hides, wool, and leather, and takes in re turn the products of all manufacturing Europe*. The southern shore, compris ing the northern line of Asia Minor, has also been quickened into an activity which bids fair to bring it up to its ancient prosperity. Samsoon and Trebi zond are the principal ports, and are the gates through which the trade of Persia, Armenia, and central Asia can flow to Europe. The local products are not verv important, chiefly consisting of wool, hides, and breadstuff's.— Cleveland, /{■raid. niK vt. ao ff; / v tut: i is thus ii i it. The anxiety of Europe concerning the complications of the Turco-liussian cam paign is likely to l>e increased by the entrance into the field of battle of two unexpected hostile forces, inimical to both sides in the conflict, and threaten ing, moreover, to carry devastation into neutral territories. Cholera and plague, front their recruiting stations in ludia and Mesopotamia, are on the march, and under the fostering conditions of war it is impossible to foretell the limits of their invasion, l.ast year cholera was on its route through Persia toward the Russian jtossessions on the Caspian, and early in the present spring grave appre hensions were aroused as to the viru lence and rapid diffusion of the epidemic. Within a tew weeks several local out breaks have been reported, one at Akrab killing 25 per cent, ot the European population in thirty hours, and new foci ot infection will doubtless be multiplied. On the other hand, placue, which has been gradually extending its ravages for some years past, had, even before the commencement of actual hostilities, spread to the regions north of Bagdad with alarming speed. Under these cir- cuinstances the war now in progress not only threatens disaster to the combat ants themselves, but menaces all Kurope with a visitation of pestilences which no precautions may be able to avert.— .\ •7* 1 or*. 11 orid. Thk Inventors of Burnett’s Cocaine — knowing that when the loss of hair occurs, it is generally from that part of the head where the greatest heat is necessarily generated, and thatanimal fats by their nature induce hea rather than alleviate it—turned their atten tion and pharmaceutical science toward vegetable oils as the basis of a medicament to promote the growth and preserve the beauty of the hair. The oleum coci'-s, or COCOAXIT Oil, presented itself most strongly, as pos sessing many properties peculiarly adapted for the purpose; but its odor was objectiona ble, and its density (except when exposed to heat) seemed for a longtime to defy all efforts to render it available, for popular use, in cool er climates, fiy a scientific selection of other ingredients, those which will chem ically combine with the oil have been discov ered, and they together have produced a compound, which is unqualifiedly pronounced to be the best that has yet appeared. Xrni-i I lint Heads that ache, stomachs that inflict dys peptic torments, muscles and joints racked with the rheumatism, are infallibly restored to health by the celebrated elixir, Hostetter’s .Stomach Bitters, a medicine prescribed by physicians; possessing infinite purity, and which no one takes in vain who is atllicted with any of the numerous complaints to which it is adapted. It frequently happens that so-called remedies fail to produce a permanent effect. Tnis is because they are merely palliatives, and therefore do not re move the cause of the maladies, whose symp toms they after a time cease to ameliorate. This is notably the ease with opiates and sedative drugs. It is not so, however, with liostetter’s Bitters, which nro a searching specific that conquers the disease as well ns banishes its indicia.
