THE TES’JP SENTINEL. ''' ' 1 Fhvt, two dors from Vrowl St. fVfry,\Vw!m[|iij Ly T. I*. IJil LU IELI). JEsUI*. GeOUGIA, JULY IS. 1877. A Trip to St Simon’s Island- Promises to write can only be met by ‘•copy.” So licrc goes. I know of nothing more interesting, to me at loift, than a rocent trip which I made to St. Simon’s Island, near Brunswick. Tlio trip was made on th§4th of July. Not from any very gushing feelings of patriotism which struggled for utter ance, but because it was a gala day ami many boats were plying between Brunswick and the Island, and furo was reduced. Eailv in the morning, in company with Rev. Dr. Griffith and wife of Blackshenr, Kev. Air. Abbott nnd wife of Brunswick, and llev. .Mr. Griffith of Darien. We tool: pansago on the little slcam* er “Eureka.” There were a good many other excursionists also on board who, like ourselves, were out hunting pleasure. Tbo hoot was small, but by crowding wo managed to have room enough to rnako tbo trip. We landed at the famous mills of Dodge. Meigs & Cos. I went on a tour of inspection and found their furnaro down and tho boil ers scattered about the yard. This in new mill ond I was very much sur piiscd to find it so. Enquiring the cause, wns told that tho boilers were so badly burned that they hud to bo re moved. Defective masonry alleged as tho cause. They must have a quantity of money or elec such mistakes will soon break thorn. I, however, must record my endorsement of their wis dom in repairing as soon as they saw tho ncecssity. Many others governed by avarice would have continued to run, endangering not only property', but human lifo. I do hope they may liavo bettor luck this time. The objective point of my party was Froderico nnd the historic “Wesley Oak.” Through the kindness of Moss P. Footo and Abbott, a wagon and a pair of mules, with a trusty driver, was on lmnd to take us through, a distanco of seven miles Tho sun was un clouded, tho road open and sand-fields were on overy side. Oh I how hot the prospect looked All wpio ttopplicd .vithjumbrellas except myself. Oppor tunely friend Stacy cainc up and kindly loaned mo his. It luu been returned, wittijnmuy thanks. I’lenty of ice mul provisions on hand, n morry crowd we atnrtnd. On tho wny wo slopped at the “ Baloholor don ” of M ss. Foole & i'uyfor. There wo cat watermelons and tlraiik ioo-waler. I ventured lo advise Foote lo hunt a “ Head," I ondorso him n a good Foole, if any of my fair friends get n elianoo at him; Thou onward wo w< nt by turns serious and t y. About uoou we arrived at tho old church and cemetery. Near by lands the oak under which tradition lias it that Jotiu and Chnrlo* "Wesley preached when they wero missionaries to Georgia in 173 G-7: Tho trees are stalely and tiro forest grand. What a feting placo for retirement and medita te >n. The old church, built by whom and when I do not know, is ready to fud. The scats and alter have been removed; tho roof rotten and every t:i:i g indicates that in a few years morn it will bo but a heap of luhbish. I t 'l’ul many stems marking the rcst i : places of many of the former in -1;• I itants of the island. As 1 walked i! ’■ 'orh this resting place of the dead, v. .lithe Gormans call “ God’s aerr,” 1 V.t very forcibly the responsibilities f life, and wondered about tho devel n . its of death, living, dying, and wirin’* history in brief. What alter •hath? Who can tell but tho J old from Heaven Our little gr> up : ■ iued under tho Wesley oak, after w! :oh Her. Mr. Hayes ma lea brief ?• ,'iveut concerning tie visit of tire "W sh \s to the island. Then wo sung ll'.’ v. rid popular hymn of Charles We- y, “Jesus Lover of my Soul." Ivt'v, Dr. Gritlith load in an earnest pi . v r that tho God of the Wesleys would be our God. Benediction was proroe ced, and we returned to Bruns wick tint night. The day is a sacred ono in my memory. This article is already too ioug. I could mite more. May do so if your readers so desire, lours truly, H. Watermelons will meet with a warm rrcc tie: at this cilice. Our devil says i i.s ’-rot is too loose by half and that thing l ut a rel moat and black seed watermelon can tiyhteu them.
