Rev. A. Clai k, Mr. Francis Trowcll and
Miss Gdtids Owens, both of Wayne

On Moud ay las* the cows was bcl
lowing to a g real extent. We walked"
out on the street and all that we could
see to cane it. was a gcntlemnn sitting
under an of. k asleep and we presume
the sizs ofi h is f<>et. was the cause, for
lie soon wok l i and g“t away as fast as
those feet w( uld admit and the bellow
ing ceased.
5Ve met a gentleman last Snnday
night walkinj x as if he was in a hurryjto
get to somebt >dy’s house, or was going
after the doo tor for someone that was
about to die and we asked: ‘Which way
now, Mr.——? He turned around,
scratched bit : auburn curls and said ;
“I’m going a round here after tny hym
book.” Wo went on to church and
thought no a lore about it until we saw
him come in with a young lady, that,
fioru her nrq earaoco, would make two
ot him. Pre 'ty good hym book, but we
don’t think h a could carry it in bis left
breast pocket very handy.
A certain vnutig man in town lias
been trying very bard, for tho past
week or tw(v, to form the acquaintance
of a young Is fly that has not been iu

succeeded in gaining her acquaintance

A few nights i afterwards, according to

They chattel 1 a-wny very lively for a
couple of li ours, talking on “Gist one

they bad . c onversed for some time on
everything imaginable, our young hero
became drov sy, hung his head and was
soon in the land of nod. The yonng
lady taking notice of his silence, asked
him if be fas asleep. Ho raised bis
bead, wiped bis eyes and answered;
“Ho mam, your beauty would keep me
awake, no matter how sleepy I might
get.” She-did not say anything to birn,
and pretty a ion they wore both in the
arms Morp’tens, They being silent for
so long a time, the gentleman of the
bouse walked to the door of the room in
which they.were sitting and said; “It’s
about time to go to bed, isn’t it ?” Our
yonng hopeful thought so, and jumped
up. gathi ped bis bat, got on his horse
and put for heme. New look here, young
folks, the next time you want to talk
let us know and we’il come aronnd and
keep you awake. If we can’t do so
any other way, we’il bring you around

BLACK&IIEAB NOTES.
BY ZIP.
We have, occasionally, a little fight in
town and from that to a police eourfc.
The sun shines hot this week and fans
are in demand.
Some body says Brantley and Bur
ney’ lost a li ie muie la4 Sunday. Where
did they lose him, Willie ?
John Anderson, T. 51. Hurt and D.
Campbell is very til Wo hope uot se
riously.
Dr. SV. Nolle, of Brunswick, is in
these parts this week soliciting dental
work.
A meeting of tho conference will be
held here next Sunday in the slotho
d ist church. Bear it iu mind,
slr. Allen thinks tho Sentinel dis
regards him by uot publishing h.s com
position.
Dr, Smith don’t object to our giving
him credit for being a good farmer but.
be does to treating us to a water melon
The demand for melons and peaches
is declining iu consequence of crowding
the market.
Surely “Plug” must he a terrible
man that so many accuses him of moon
light strolls. Go for ‘ uin,.’ Plug.
A. N. Smith, us usual, is exercising
his industry in triniing up his shade
trees, which helps tho looks of his front
yard very much.
Those wishing to invest in a fine bug
gy, will bear in mind the 26t’n inst.,
and attend tho Marshal's sale at the
Court House,
Thomas Gardner has gotjbaek in this
community again and, apparently,
wants to fight, but don’t seem to want
to meet the one be wants to assault.
How is it that everybody in town took
a notion to buy a now hat at once. Last
Sunday morning was celebrated with
new hats.
The Ordinary says that he can, here
lately, eiijoy himself better at the Court
House than anywhere else. Wo pre
sume that baby of yours cries too loud)
A. J., to suit you.
Henry Jordon has just returned from
Burnt and says tbs demands for
timber is ahead of the supplies. lie
carried clown one raft and got a draft
for 5319.00
You had better mind bow you speak
of country butter in comparing it to
dish-water, or some of these old coun
try women will tnako you think that
you was a June bug caught by a duck.
Last Sunday vse noticed a “beau'’
sleeping in church and bis sweetheart
wasn’t there. Which ono of tbs two
was the wisest, bo for sleeping in church
cr she for sleeping at home.
T. I). S. A. club that has always
heretofore been organized so early in
the spring, has not been in assemblance
this summer until this week. They
look to be healthy and robustivith plen
ty to chew and drink but tho tug is, how
do they got it.
Cspt. T. J. Fuller is goiug to bring
charges against the town council for
damages done to bis shade trees the
day of the str et working by the hands.
Look out Captain, the council has the
same right to protect tho streets as you
do your trees, and they will retaliate tn
bringing charges against you for ob
structing the public street.
Street working last Friday and Sat
urday was almost n. failure, in conse
quence of dry weather and scarcity of
hands. Out of one hundred and thirty -
nioe summoned there was but twenty'
nine present at roll-call, prepared to
wrrk. The and liar bills was more free
than the idea of working two days.
Some of our boys that thought last week
they were mon, and escorting the yonng
ladies about, and very bandy iu almost
■tvery capacity of a man, was nothing
but boys when they received tbeir sum
raons to work. The Marshal reports
18 defaulters, 04 paid and 29 excused
on accouut of sickness, etc.
Mrs Catherin McDonald, wife cf the
late Dr. It. McDonald, died at the rcs
! idence of her soon, Win. A. McDonald,
of Ware county, 2 a. m. Satur
day the 14th inst, She retired to rest
on Monday night, leaving the can

On turning aronnd she feel, striking the
bed-stead and failing on the floor, dis
locating her wrist, bruising her hip and
spine and otherwise injuring hers'df.
! Being very heavy and quite aged, she
i sood lost her consciousness from ex

1 and lived an exemplary Christian life.
: She loaves a large family of children
! aid grand children to mourn her loss,
jAt the time of her death she was 77

A Rat Destroyer.
A genthnan gave us the following to
publish in answer to a query made by
our correspondent at Gurdi:
Take a common plate and fill it half
full of water, add a heaping teaspoon
full ef cobalt and on going to bid, place
where they most frequently u<e, not
leaving any other water that they can
get to about the place.
Broke Jail-
On last Tuesday evening just after
we had gone to press three negroes that
was confined in jail awaiting their trial
before the Superior Court male their
escape. It seems as though soma one
had given thorn a piece of scantling
through the window. Two of them that
was iu a room to themselves, broke open
the door to their room and went into
the room that contained the negro that
attempted rape at Gardi sometime ago.
After they had succeiaKd in breaking
him loose, they then proceeded to the
stair-ease, under which they concealed
themselves and awaited the arrival of
tiie keeper to make good their escape.
As tho jailor entered tho door and was
going up tho §tairs to their cell'', they
made for the door —which was left opeu
—and took to the woods. Mr. Bennett
hearing the rattle of tho chain quickly
started in persuit of them They wero
too far gone before he could got down
tho steps for him to overtako them.
He fired several shots at them but with
out any effect.
A meeting of Satiliu Lodge. No. 5,
