Members of the Order in good standing are fraternally invited. W. H. Whaley, W. M. LOCAL ITEMS. Jestip Lodge No 112, held their reg tu ar meeting on Saturday last and had •a large attendance. |- There is a plenty of Sweet Cider at fire cents a glass and fine Cigars at five cents each left at the Jcsup House Bar. Call and try them. What has become of the Morning 2fews ? It has failed to reach our sauc itum for some time. Wo dislike to be without so valuable a paper. The Greenville Advocate says Brig ham Young left less than a thousand wives and fourteen hundred fatherless children, and an estate valued at sixty five millions. So they canuot bo pen' milees, and probably better off to be ; fatherless. We refer the readers of the Sentinel to the advertisement of ,T. H. Estill in another column. We wuild advise all v4o>read and subscribe for tbo best Weakly in the State. {Last Monday was street working, but o*’y a few turned out. About twonty ae, the balance, had rather pay their fifty cents. We say all that haveu't ijpsid had batter come up and do so be 'forc court marshal day, as Mayor Wha ley will not be so lenient as heretofore, Tie is determined to have the cash or tc-ike yoa work whethor you want to or ot. Mupcrior Court. *or Superior Court was in session last week, lion. Judge Pate presiding. The bar was well represented, CM, J. D-Ruropli, G. M. T. Ware, S. It. Har ris, of Jcsup. Col. John C. Farmer, of Hincsville, and Col. J. E. Sweat, of The Court adjourned on Saturday and all passed of quietly. So are few had a plenty of the corn juice but not sufficient for the corporation to make a raise. AVery Important Matter. JVe were informed yesterday by * merchant that that several pssonge had arrived in the city by the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad who *id ihsy asked no questiou at Jesup-or - elsewhere cs to where they came from, nor were they appr.osched by any quarantine officer. It is.,also staled that there arc present in the city sovoral parties from Fern andiua woli ure registered at the hotels ns from ether poiuls. This is a very important matter, and we feel it our solemn duty to call to it the attention of of our city authorities. Unless our quarantine regulations are rigidly enforced they are worse than useless. — SatssH'.nah News. We are under the impression that the .Savannah News and its tailing merchant had better "hold up” a little> for the liveliest man in our little town, at tbo, arrival of every train that is al lowed to carry paSscngets, is a gentle man who we understand is stationed hero as quarantine officer from Savan nah. We feel that it is due this gentle man to say that Savannah may rest easy with her interest in bis hands, as he is qp to Ilia duties and nothing es capes him that he can persistently pre vent. TO TEE CITIZEN OF JESUP- Iam Ur haste to explain myself to all of my customers, admiting nty wrong, which you all are aware of. I did not use the tools, towels, hair c! ths, powder, or anything connected with my first-class trade, and after I find that niy white friends will not tolerate any such, I will be sure to keep tlioir commandment in the future, and I will be glad to receivo them back again. I am yours truly, J. H. GRANT, Fikst-Clas* Baisheu. Fashion lias brought the slippers of our grandmothers from retirement in the garret ami placed them upon the feet of our wives, and now we can con fidently look for reform in the home ,circle. When button boots and lace gaiters wero in vogue, the children of • the present generation could nt bo got at With .celerity and facility. But now the mother of the family can uoslipper slipper, and slipper round the rear of _f.be f>rnggay,.jipon which the slipper will descend' .with ncatoss and di patch.” Asa regulator of the rising hopefuls, nothing has ever equaled the handings rf the flipper of our Look put y oungsters! W. Colquitt’s mill started up again last Monday moruiug, after having been shut down for one week for want of orders. Lumber orders aro scarce, and very low prices are offered for those that are sent out. There aro several schools in operation near hero at present. Tho teachers arc Miss Lu llaybon. llov. W. T. E. Camp-Meeting —Tho colored folks in this section of country will com mence a Gamp-meeting at Pine Grove on the 17th of October and to continue until the 22nd, embracing flvo days. The Primitivo Bp‘ist Asociation will commence on Friday before the fourth Sunday in October, at Big Creek cliurch in Pierce county. Wo predict a large turn'-out, as the majori ily we hoar talk are going to attend. La< Sunday at the public bridge near Shildb church, was baptized by Key. Renbin Crawford, Primitive Bap tiat, two members and by Rev. Aikin son, Missionary Captist, one. After baptism the largo crowd that had as sembled, seperated. Each one, after their faith, proceeded t > their rcspect iva churches, whore the Gospel was dis pensed with in the usul manner. One day last Week a middlo aged man from Wayeross, on routo for this place, on foot, was overtaken by dark and intoxication and failed to reach hi destination, lie stopped til the section houses, about one mile from hero and no doubt he was unconscious of his es istoucc when stopping, 110 was robbed that night, he says, of ono pistol valu' and at eighteen dollars, one pocket knifo and two dollar in money, that he bad when be left Waycross in the morning. He claims to be a residsnt of Liberty conn ty. We sympathize with the gentleman but can’t help him. AXetv Yorfr School Marin. A white individual who gives her name as Mrs. Watts aDd hailing from New York, or rather came to Bruns wick from that port on the Steamer, City of Dala", has been creating quite a sensation in our quiet little town. She says she is a baud—maidon of the Lord and that she has bocu out among the Indians trying to enlighten and chris tianize them, but it was the general 5 opinion of the passengers that she was j ibe emi-ary of a different spirit from 1 the oue she claimed to be. 11-port says that her principal amusement on 1 ship-biard was playing “hide and geek i with the waiters, of which report there ■ can be but little doubt, for immediately 1 upon her arrival in Jesup she hid her ! self away in a negro b larding bouse, whit- th; nir.itU’-d -alo’iii‘l by any ! but the negroes until about noon. At I Port Poyal she was seen to kiss a n„- | gro preacher. Wo have seen this in dividual, and must say that tho negro proacher must have been possessed of one of the most accommodating stom achs. She is cn route for Jacksonville, Fla., f or the r purpose of getting up a negro school. From our knowledge of Jack sonville,! we do not think that the good citizens of that place, either white or colored, will consider her as much of an acquisition. For fear they may not bo informed of her distinguished arrival, and consequently not receive that foitr tesy which Floridians know so t veil how to extend to such cattle, we make a note of it and would bo glad if the press gen erally wonld '“band her around.” Since writing the above wp jiavc been credibly informed that this spopi meo of humanity has determined not to go to Florida at present, but v ill take up her abode iu this place. She has al ready received licens to teach and is now engaged in making up a negro school. It rsally seems strange to us living in the South, that so many of this class coming from the North, with its cold and pure atmosphere, should bo so carried away with tho odor of tho negro, that they are almost invariably found getting up negro schools or hunt ing up negro husbands as soon as they arrive. Is this the kind of progress in civilization which they say they wish to teach us in the South? If so, we want none of it in our coffee. Wo boast of boiug a race that is pure in genera tion, and, as there aro plenty of negroes here well qualified to teach all tho ne gro schools, and onougn negro women to marry the negro men, wo can very well dispoice with all such people and had much rather tho people of the North would keep keep them “to hum.” Jf tbo people of the North cmiio down hero and occupy tho position of white people and observe tho difference, which an alwiso God has placed between them and the negro, then we arc willing to treat them with respect, but when they come here for the above purposes, we want nothing to do with them, and can only say that it is too true in their ease “that the dog has returned to his vomit and tho washed sow to her wallowing in tho mire.” Leg al Advertisemknts. jyQTIOE.
