G. J. HOLTON,
Candidate for State Senator, 3 Dist.
FROM APPLING.
Dear Sentinel- —As you ate, no
doubt, lonely on watch tower, I pro
pose to send you a few items from the
wild woods of Appling. Politics being
the main subject at present, we shall
discourse of it (i”st. The candidates
for Representative at this t me are Mr.
J. Moody and M. Branch. Branch
seems to be a running stream, and I am
encliued to think he will win the race.
We bad a po'itical meeting at Tay
lortown last Saturday, 17th ins*., and
had a very good attendance. Col Hol
ton, by- appointment, addressed the
meeting and uiane an excellent speech.
He explained various sections of ttie
Constitution and warmly recommended
the people to ratify it. The day was a
lovely one and, judging from the nu
merous assemblage present tho whole
disUict around was well represented
l'he ladies were present in force, and
as a disinterested spectator, I must say
the Col. appears to be a favorite with
the ladies. If a man has God and the
ladies on his side he mustw-a.
Col. Holton, it is thought, will make
a ver* good race. He is p .pular among
the real sterling meu f tne com ty. He
is a live, progressive man, and deserves
success in his preseut undertaking. He
has an honorable ambition to represent
his district in the Senat -, an 1 we hope
be will succeed. M’e need a practiod
clear-headed man—a man who will
originate something beneficial. There
may be some more brilliant ones, but
eloquence or brilliancy' are ver y seduc
tive. It is sweet no doubt, yet it very
often happens that f ‘lt keeps the word
of promise to our ear, and brakes it to
our liopo.
We trust you will give Col. 11, a
rousing reception at Jesup, With best
wishes we must say ‘au rovoir ”

anything hut creditable to that b >dv
The Senato’s majority is con*Vsscedly
exercising its powers, not for the good
of the country, but simply to maintain
it hold on Hayes and keep him in
check. Day after day he sends in his
nominations, and these are sunk at
once in the stagnant depths of a stand
ing oommittc', and held in reserve to be
played off as foils against future
nomina'ipns, that not one is considered
and advised upon i‘s own merits or
upon any suggestions affoctiug the
public utility.
This course is alike destitute of
geneto-ity or patrio'i-rn. By it tho
public interests aic made the mere
frotball of partisan rings and cliques
the sport of political facto ns The
whole civil service is held by the
"stalwarts” as a whip for Hayes’ back,
and not one single patriotic considera
tion is admitted to control its exercise.
Can there be worse morals or a more
pernicious example?
A gentleman from Bregard, N. C,,
furnishes the information that about g

of tile country, extending as far as Han
derson, N. C., felt a savero shock of an
earthquake, which lasted several iiin
utes and frighteud the inhabitants half
out of their wits. Tho shook, it is said,
was much more severe than the shook
near Bald mountain a few days ago,
and is suppo-ed to proceed fumi

neighborhood. The uprising of the
earth proceeded in tlie form of a wave
from southwest to northeast . S'range
to say r , the shook was not f it at Spar

towns this side ot the mountains.
