It baa often been raid that if corn were as
sure a crop in tbe South as cotton, the great
ness aLd prosperity of tbe country would be
assured. It would seem from the certificates
published in auotbt r column, iu regard to
the famous Egyptian Tsp Root Corn, that
this end is to be attained.
It costs but little to test the merits of this
D ew variety, but our farmers might profit
largely by giving it a trial.

and will we think be very applicable *Ao
Jesup. Tbe Rev. A. A. Ellenwood, the pas
tor in charge, is a good preacher and hard
worker in the cause of Christianity, and de
serves Well of his fleck : “The day of assess
ment with tbe Method s s is at band. We
have seen a specimen of prom be to pay in
tne hands of one ct the stewards of the
church, which is Very convenient and saves
a deal of trouble in the way of colleotious,
while it alio gives some positive assurance
of tbe amount likely to bcontributed to the
support of the minisry. Let all our cit -

The gnat contest in this coun ry between
capital and labor, still wag<s, and the ten
dencies art that property every where is fast
accumulating in the bandsof|the few. This
is all wrong, and Messrs. Whaley A Bon have
determined to divide the profits that thsy
have hi retofore made on goods, with their
customers.

Appling Saperior Court convened
Monday.
Various impr>vements are seen on
every hand, io our quiet little ville.
The convicted convicts were march
ed off this morning to their respective
abodes.
We hardly ttai-.ik tbe frost of Monday
night, was heavy enough to effect vege
tation very much.
Saturday night the weather turned
off quite cool, with a stiff broeze all day
Sunday.
Jack Frost put in hie hoary appear
ance in Jesup Tuesday morning, much
to tbe surprise of our denizens.
Mr. W. M. Austin, who is well known
io our commonity. has taken charge of
.tbe Jesup House, tod is settiog a splen
did table. Come and sec.
Col. R. L. Gentry, the Savannah
News talkist, was registered at the Jes
up House lest night. Be is an inces
sant worker for his paper, which is the
paper of all papers io our estimation.
Mr. Estell is the paper king of the South,
and Col. Gentry is king of agents.
The nimble floa has arrived at Jes
up, and meets with daily scourging.—
They have assembledd themselves to
gether in our office, aod each one gone
to work to see who can tickle tbe most
legs. Oh, for something to drivo them
away. Ding a flea.
All that Jesup lacks to place her on
an equal footing with other towns of no
more population, is energy and pluck.
Fellow-citizens, bestir yourselves, and
get out of this slothful mood. Be up
and doing, every one of you, for all are
certa Dly interested. Hitch the mule
ot energy to the shafts, take tbe vs Lip
of enterprise in your hands, and make
tbe dust fly along the road of progres .
Gear up yourselves, and go to pulling
like horses.

Honor to Whom Honor is Due.
We must ask permission to correct
an error which wag made by our late
efficient Grand Jury iu their General
Presentments. Our readers will notice
that they give credit to all thj county
officials in Wayne County, for the pres
ent satirfactory condition of the finan
ces of this county. This is a grave mis
take, and while wo are wiliing to accord
due praise to our county officers for
their vigilance and efficiency, wc must
state that the board of County Com
missioners, is the principal cause of the
county being at f resent free from debt,
with money in tbe Treasury, and also
the Bole authors of tbe system which
has distributed our expenditures and in
debtedness in such a manner, as to
reuder them easily understood by the
Grand Jury, and those who wish to ex
amine into such matters.

Mr G Henry Miller
We welcome this gentleman wLohas come
to reside among us, and trust he will find
our people pleasant and agreeable. Mr. M.
is a lawyer by profession, and we hope he
wi 1 fiad it to his interest to locate perms'
nmly, for we are in need of prompt and en
eigeticmen, and as such, we congratulate
the community upon receiving Mr M, as a
citizen among us.
The Penitentiary.
Under the vig lint efforts of our efficient
Solicitor General, backed by the services of
a good Grand Jury, the County of Wayne
will be rid of the presence of several disa
greeable and dangerous characters.
James Reilly, white, convicted of Larceny
after Trust, has been sentenced to two years
in the penitentiary. No crime is more de
tested, than Larceny after Trust, and we
hope that this conviction will operate to the
good of the community, by making people
very ca-eful how they hereaiter violate a aa
ored trust.
Nut on the list to leave us, is James Car
ter, colored. He resides under the benign
protection of the Governor, for fifteen years.
May his quarters be comfortable. Mind, O
ye night ramblers how you accidentally get
into another man’s bed room,* Burglary in
the night is what takes him away.
Next trots out Jerry Brown, colored, but
not so fast and lively aa when he orertook
neighbor McGlotbin’s fat bog. He hankered
after hog meat. He will now seek co >1 q lar
ters in some remote corner of tbe.Dade Coal
M nee, and will employ bis leiiure time in
sharpen log his to* nails for the next hog race.
There g ntlemen will oocupy the parlor floor
in the ooanty palace, for a few days, while
Mr. Sheriff is making his ariaagements to
take them on a tour of the State, to inspect
the house that Jack built.
Jake Crawford will mo- th down tbe waste
places of Jtsup, and use bissurplns muscle
in the philanthropic endeavor to beautify
our town. We trust he will find it lighter
than his last undertaking of stealing from a
house. For the space of one year will he
thus devote bis services free gratis, and for
nothing.
James Davis loved to carry concealed wea
pons most too well. Being caught in the act
aud oenvioted, he must contribute $25 to
the County Treasury, or in default thereof,
be can ornament himself with a ball and
chain, and flourish a shovel in the peaceful
pursuit of beautifying Biunswiok's shady
streets.
Tiie doxology will be delivered by our
preachers at the first opportunity. So say
we all.
A New Enterprise—Still They Come
We welcome to our midst, Messrs. W. M.
Dye A Bro. These gentlemen are natives of
South Carolina, and have been attrao'ed
luther by our fiie pitch pine forests. They
propose embarking in tbe turpentine and ros
in business, and have a large number of trees
already barked. These improvements arc
located immediately East of Jisup, between
the tra k of he A. A G,, and M. A B. li R.
A part of iheir machinery is a’ready in piac>,
and tLe balance under the enirge:io super-
V sion of the older Dye, is rapidly being ar
ranged. By next week, they will have th >ir
works under full bleat. At that time, they
ixpect to tax to the inltex ent, their whole
Lrce, cols s.mg of some thirty hands. They
will run some twenty or thirty charges per
week, and turn out tome ten barrels of rorio
per day. They are also making their os n
staves and bairels.
Success to home manufactures ! Bee what
energy and pluck can do. Such men as Dye
A Bro., are valuable additions to any corn,
munity. To all such, we extend a hearty
w elcome. Call on us, young gentlemen, and
we will take pleasure in being of servico to
you.
CORN vs COTTON!
EGYPTIAN TAP ROOT CORN.
From tlie River Nile,
This corn possesses many advantages over
our common corn. It stands drought muoh
better—taking such deep root in the ground.
It will mature from five to six weeks earl er,
end yield at least onr-third more per acre.—
It requires one-'bird less work- —-growth so
rapid it mods but two ploughing*. It makes
meal almost equal to flour.
See what these who have tried it Bay:
Cleveland, Tk\n., Oct., 2, 1877.
Bring largely engaged in planting, I have
tes'ed the merits of this corn, and consider
its introduotioo fortunate for Southern far
mers. 1 have raised large, full years of corn
iu sixty-five days from the day it was point
ed, and parties in Georgia who tried it, tell
me it will mature there as early, if not earli
er, as a hot climate suits it best.

Si*—l have planted the Egyptian Tap
Root Corn, and am much pleased with it. —
I can recommend it—think our farmers
should try it. I', matures much earlier thaft

and takes less work, its growth is so rapid.

Mr. B. 0. Willis, Ladd's Springs, Tenn :
Dear Sir—l planted a small quantity of
your Egyptian Tap Root Corn last spring,
and am well pleased with it. Think it a very
superior article of corn to any I have seer,
and would advise farmers generally to plant
it by all means, from this faot : It stands
tbe drought admirably, matures fire weeks
sooner than oommen com, and takes one
third less work. My neighbors are all well
pleased with it. Yours respectfully,

Mr. B. O. Willis:
Dear Kir—l Lave planted a small quantity
of your Egyptian Tap Root Corn, and am

It stands the drought well, matures much

our common corn. I can in all confidence
recommend it to all farmers.
