Appling County Grand Jury
Presentments.
We, tbe Grand Jury, chosen and
sworu for the present term of court, beg
leave to sta'e that after a carfnl inves
tigation of the affairs pertaining to our
county’s interest. that fir.'-t: Wc have
examined all Notary Pnblio and Justi
ce’s of the Peace hooks, and find them
j neatly and correctly kept; also the Sher
iffs book, we fiud correctly kept
\Vo have appointed as a committee
to examine the remaining county offi
cers books : John Overstieot, James
Tillman and 11. W. Surreney, and rec
ommend that they he paid for such ser
vice two dollars nor day each, and that
the Ordinary direct said committee to
meet at Baxley on a certain day to cx
amine said books, between now aud
next Superior Court.
AYe recommend that the jurors of
this oouuty he paid one dollar and fifty
cents pier day, for services rendered,
and that the Sheriff and Clerk of the
court be paid ten dollars, each, for ex
tra services duriug the present year.
AA T e recommend that Elias Branch
he appointed Notary Public, and ex-of
ficio J. P., iu and for the 457th district,
G. M., made vacant by the resiguatiou
of B. B. llopps.
We find the roads usually in good
order, but recommend that the Road
Commi-sioners be more faithful iu the
di charge of their duty.
Wo further recommend that the
County Commissioners do not levy a tax
exceeding 50 per cent, the present year.
AYe are proud to state that our coun
ty is free from debt, and there are less
violation of law than usual. In conclu
sion, we beg leave to tender to his
Honor, the Judge, our sincere thanks
for the able mauner in which lie admin
isters justice, and to the Solicitor Gen
eral, Simon \V. Hitch, for his kind as
sistance and courtesy shown our body.
