T.iesd 'y night, of last week, it was the
writers privilege to meet Miss Annie Maria
Barnes—“ Cousin Annie” —the talented and
highly accomplished editor and proprietor
of that sprightly and spicy little paper, the
Acanthus, published in the Gate City, At
lanta, Ga., as she passed through here on
her way to Valdos ta. “Cousin Annie” says
she met with very discouraging success in
Va'dosta. This is easily accounted for,
though: Brother Pendleton was not at brine.
She depends—mostly—upon the single edi
tors of a city or village, iu talking and work
ing up the people to a subscription heat to
her little gem. Hence, her limited patron
age from Valdosta. Brother Johnson, of
course, assisted her in procuring subscribers;
but theu he is a modest and bashful young
man. Can’t talk much, especially with the
ladies and children; these who are most like
ly to subscribe to an enterprise of this kind.
Returning from Valdosta Thursday 7 morn
ing, she stopped over in our quiet ville all
day, and it was tho wnters exquisite plea: -
ure to assist her iu getting up quite a num
ber of names to add to her circulation of
three thousand ; aud we found her to be a
highly intelligent aud accomplished young
lady, well listed for the position she so grace
fully fills.
We take a' great pleasure in recommend
ing “Cousin Annie” arid her little AcevAhus
bud, to the patronage of every highly r.fir
ed community, or neighborhood. The beau
ty of i: is, tbs work is all done by young la
dies. This, within itself, should induce eyn -
p ithizing people to take it, thereby oncom
ing both editor and compositors 7 . Wo had,
indeed, a very recherche time with “Cousin
Annie,” going from Louse to house with hi r,
so’ioitii g subscriptions, and srcctedel ad
mi; ably ; yea, beyond cur most sanguine ex

led to this fatal act. The ball entered
