During tbe past week, there liae been
a consiJeralle rain fall here, and so far
as I can Lear, it has extended pretty
well oecr the county. TI ere rains have
fallen just in lime to insure the corn
crop, and I il.iijk it a safe gurss to say
that tbe yield in this county will be un
usually laree. I bad tbe pleasure of
conversisg with a gentleman who las
jus ( made a trip through the counties
of Appling, C ffee, Irwiu, Wilcox, Ber
l'ien and IJebols, and ia all these coun
ties he reports the crots as being ueu
rual'y good, an 1 in sili of them there
will be enough corn made to supply tbe
home demand. In some of them it is
thought there will be a considerable ex
cess. He represents tbe corn crop in
Wilcox and I twin as being splendid.—
The people of Irwin t .Id him that such
a corn crop was never known in that
conoty. I aru disposed to think that
the people rf Georgia have awakened
from the dream of making a fortune by
raising cotloa, and buying bread aud
meat from the West. Now tho motto
of the Georgia fanner is : plant plenty
of corn and raise meat aud bread first,
then plant cotton for sale. No agri
cultural people can hope to bo indepen
dent, no matter how great the market
crop may be, who fail to raise their
own bread and meat. I use the words
market crop as applicable to outlon, to
bacco, &e., for I consider it poor poli
cy to sell corn, &c. Let the farmer
feed all his corn, hay, potatoes. &c., to
his stock, and sell the meat. Thus he
can “kill two birds with one stone,’
for the moat will pay as much (I think
more) when sold as the corn, and the
farmer has tho manure made by his
stock. Some agricultural writers esti
mate the value or the manure as being
equally as valuable as the corn and hay
consumed by the stock. This I think
is placing too high an cstimato upon
it, but it. is certainly' the farmers surest
road *o independence. Plenty of ma
nure insure rich lands, and rich lands
produce large crops. I know if no
lands in Georgia which so soon shows
the effects of generous manuring va the
wire-grass COUuth s The soil is go lls

clay. When deeply pk\y.A. and" well

absolute freedom of opinion upon po

stream of foreign immigration sits stead

must encounter the Indians sculping
kniie, and should he c.-capo that, the
fevers will surely destroy part of his
family, and tbe grasshoppers, and many
other noxious insects will destroy bis
crop. If these people wevo acquaint
ed with wire-grass Georgia, a large por
tion of tin in eouhl be iuduoed to settle
amongst us. They have not hitherto
come hero, because they have been lead
to believe that tbe people of the South
were a set of blood thirsty wietehes,
who gloried iu rapine and murder.—
Tnc time has como when they should
be better infouned. Georgia no da
population—provided she can get the
right kind—and it would pay h r to
have au euergetio agent iu Kurope : —
particularly in Germany—whoso duty
it should bo to inform the people as to
tho true character of Georgia, her cli
mate, soil, productions, &c., and prove
to them that there are no mOro peace
able, law abiding people, than the peo
ple of Georgia. To succeed in this im
portant übj.xt, Georgia should send an
able uiau to Europe, aud in order to sa
curu tko service-- of a first rate man,
pay hint a first rale salary; authorize
him to aid poor immigrants who cun
come to him thoroughly recommended,
by partially paying H eir passage motl
