APOLOGETIC.
Tbe valedictory in our last week’s is
sue caused some of our subscribers to
think that the Sentinel would stop.—
Not so. It has delayed us only one
day, and we hope to be on time in fu
ture. All that is necessary for Jesup
to have a good paper is for the citizens
to support it. We trust that the peo
ple will come up and help us. Every
citizen of Wayne County ought to sub
scribe for their home paper. Do not
forget our club rates.
The Weather.
The weather during the past two
days has been, we think, without a pre
cedent in tliis section for the heat. We
spent Monday in Brunswick, the ther
mometer there registered 98, and no
ice in the city. A cargo arrived though
before we left. In our sanctum yester
day at 4 r. sr. the thermometer stood
at 100 —blood heat. We would like
to see it ab ut 15 or 20 dogrees lower.
Notwithstanding the intense heat cur
town enjoys its usual good health.
Baxley Letter.
Owing to the late reception of our
Baxley letter, also the delay caused by
oar being without a printer for several
days, we are compelled to omit the cor-,
respondeoce for this issue.

The Congressional Canvass in
Bulloch,
Statesboro, Ga., August 7. —Editor
Morning News: Ou Monday last, the
Democratic paity of Bulloch county
met at Statesboro, for the purpose of
selecting a delegation to the Savannah
convention. The rain came down in
torrents in the and tbe friends
to the different aspirants were loud in
their abuse of the weather being so un
favorable to a good turu out of the peo
pie. But, nevertheless, the crowd was
by far the largest aud most enthusias
tic that had ever assembled in tbe
county fur a like purpose. It is gen
erally conceded that moie than five
hundred while voters were present. In
the past history of our politics but lit
tle interest has been manifested in tho
s lection of a candidate for Congress,
the people having beeu willing to ens
trust this to others, and feeling that
their duty was to support whoever the
convention nominated. Rut in this
campaign the liveliest interest was man
ifested by tho fiieuds of T"ospkius and
Black Xumpkius having presided over
us as JUilge for s veral years, and win
ning ihe stcom and friendship of ma
ny of our best citizens ; and Black, be
ing a countryman, farm r and neigh
bor, living in uur adj duiug county, aud
having many warm frieu sand clients
here.
The meeting was marked by enthu
siasm aud a warm and excited interest
in the friends cf each, neither having
much confidence in their own side, and
that while the opposing party must be
in the minority, t'iey were determined
to carry the day Under these circum
stances, tnen swore and others, tried to
Speak, aud the assembly threatened to
go to pieces in a storm of excitement,
the point ou which hung the most feel
ing, evidently, being au effort on the
part of each contending party to seek
the advautage. But it was soon ascer
tained that the i>euj>le wanted the. fair
thing, if they knew what it was.
D. li. Groover, Esq., a Tompkins
man, was elected Chairman o.ver l)r, J.
F. Brown, a Black man, by a l,arge ma
jority Mr. Potter then m.o.ved that
the Chair appoint a committee of eigh
teen to select the two delegates.. This
aution was opposed very bitterly, the
opposing par'y coutending that it this
method te pursued, the Chair would
surely appoint a committee that would
select a Tompkins delegation. Air.
Potter aud Maj. J. S. Coue supported
the motion very ably and referred to
the precedent m our county in the past,
to the precedent of Chatham and, Burke
aud other couu.ies, and said that if the
committee selected by the Chair were
to select a Tompkins delegation, and
the people were uol for Tompkins, the
people could instruct the delegates as
to whom they should support. At this
stage of the proceedings \V. H. Cone,
Esq., moved as a substitute to AD-
Potter’s motion that delegates be cho
sen by ballot. This was opposed ou
the ground that it would be the most
dilatory and troublesome medio i.
Mr. A. B. Miller tbeo moved as a
substitute to both of the preceding mo
tious, that the meeting sojourn, aud
that the citizens of each militia district
in the county (there being six) elect,
by ballot or otherwise, thiee men from
each district, and that these eighteen
men so elecitd elect the two delegates.
This motion was adopted.
In the committee room, D. R. Groo
ver, Esq, and 0. A. Sorrer, Esq, were
uomina'ed as Tom;kins men, aod re
ceived respectively thirteen aud twelve
votes out of the eighteen. It will Urns
be s,oeu that Judge Tompkins has fair
ly carried this county as against Colo
nel Black. The prcleiei.ee of the peo
ple for the lion. Juliau ilartridgc was
clearly expressed. A motion to sup
port the uomiuce of the Democratic
party was offered and adopted.
Thus one of the liveliest and most
euthuai.istic political Campaigns has
swept over our county. It has been
said by many cf Judge Tompkins’ po
litical and personal enemies of Chat
ham, that if the conveatiuo nominated
him, any respectable Democrat in the
district could defeat him us au Inde
pendent. But \vc a;k, where is the /•<---
peclable Democrat that would run as
an Independent in the First Congres
sional District, which has only beeo ta
ken from the hands of Radicals by sup
porting our party, and which must in
evitably go back to Radical rule if va
ried from. This talk of runuiog an In
dependent if Tompkins is nominated,
is all political clap-trap, and is nothing
less than a threat to the nominating
convention ; a threat to make the peo
ple less zealous of Judge Tompkins’
nomination. Judge Tompkins, as a
matter of course, has more or less eu
emies in Chatham, who will undertake
to lobby against his nomination, but we
hope the ears of the delegates will not
bo given to any such crowd T o del
egates from this county will go there to
represent Bulloch and not to please
Chatham particularly. It has also
beeu blown out in the country by Chat
ham coun'y men that Tompkiu can't
cou'rol a: y Radical votes, if he bo
nominated, ou account of the fact that
he has hanged and penitentiaried so
many negroes since he has been on tbe
bench. I would ask, must the o inven
tion select a candidate that, will split
the Ra Heal vote when the Democracy,
as shown by the last election, is six
thousand in majority ? I venture to say
if Judge Tompkins is lomiuatcd the
only respectable Democrat in the First
Congressional District who will oppose
linn is the Hon. S. A. Corker, of Burke
who, l learn, has not waited for the
De-uKoratio Convention to call him
out, but is uow ill the field on his own
motion. Let the convention select some
good man, and let the people, who feel
an iuterest in the life of our party, stop
pointing out any contingencies, in
which a Democrat will run as an inde
pendent, Let some man who will har
monize the party be the man, and
whether it be Hartridgo, Tompkins,
Nicholls or Black, Bulloch will respond
willi all her heart.
Citizen.
Notes From Alex Creek-
Mr. Editor : As times has been dull,
as you know generally is the case with
farmers for the last two or three months
past, most espeoi dly when the weather
is so warm and so mooli work to be
done. Crops is generally good in this
section, and a most excellent crop of
watermelons, peaches &0., but they are
about played out. Now, there is sev
eral cases of fever in this section,
though we trust no dangerous ease s ,
and hope to see ihe siek soon restored
to health. With this exception, all is
peace and happiness round our homes.
Our children is nil going to school
through tbe week ; also we have ave y
interesting S,abliatli School at Union
Church, of which atl the children,
young men and ladies is members that
live near enough, oon?ccyuetl'y we trov
er fail to have a good turnout at Sab
bath School, for this is an excellent
range for children.
Last Saturday was a day rf great on
joyment wtli the young folk®, and
old ones too, in this locality. We were
solicited by Messrs. W. M. Akins and
Goins, to attend a fish fry ou the day
above mentioned, at tlieOogburn Lake,
on the Altamaha. Up n our early ar
rival to the place above mentioned, we
found things nicely arranged, with an
excellent spring, &e. Pretty soon af
ter our arrival, tbe young ladies and
gentltemcn began to full i,u extensively
from tho surrounding neighborhood.—-
The young men that were not engaged
iu fishing, arranged some swings under
some nice shade trees, where them and
the young ladies seemed to enjoy them
selves finely ; but you had ought to
have seen tho old men lay aside their
long faces. Messrs A. G. N. and 8.,
come paddling up tbeir boats, well
supplied with a variety of very fine fi-h
Some of us that had our appetites well
sharpened up for fi.-h went to work to
getting them ready fur the fry pari, and
Mautn Claudcr to frying, who under
stood her business well,, and in a short
time hard a nice chance of fish ready for
use, Everything, suitable for the inner
man was. prepared, by the good ladies
of the neighborhood. About 2 o’clock
dinner was announced and all gathered
round the long spread table where we
enjoycdioursc-lvef-gfioely in stowing away
fi-h and a variety of other refreshments.
Your correspondent enjoyed the se nes
of the day extremely well, but must say
he enjeyed the dinner the best of all.
Dinner over,.some of the young men
took the ladies in boate and carried
them across the big lake to tho red'
waters of the Altarnaha. About four
o’clock p. m. all returned to land again
and assembled themselves together on
tho top of the hill, when our young
friend Mr. B. S. Bennett was called
upon to make a speech to the audience,
which was responded to in a very polite
manner. He spoke on the subject of
idleness, after which the lake was soon
deserted, and all were going whirling
over the rough road at the rate of two
miles per hour.
Hope the boys will give another GJi
fry soon. Yours truly,
