oak, $4 of pirie. 9 of fir, 5 of apruce, 4 of hem¬
lock, 2 of porsommon, 12 of ash, l* of willow,
and 9 of iiopiar. The New York museum of
natrirai history is to have a complete collection
of the native wood* of our entire country. Tlie
logs are being prepared in the arsenal at Cen¬
tral Park, They are, for the most part, five
feet long. At one cud a (section of half the
thickness of the log is removed. In this way
th« longitudinal and transverse graining* are
both shown. There s* also a diagonal cut on
the section, which displays that graining aiao.
The remainder of the log remains in its natu¬

TIN DEPOSITS IN THE INITE1I STATEN.
There will t»e no need of sending abroad for
tin in future. Last year v» imported 34,000,*
000 pounds of Mock tin, worth more than $6,
000,00(1, and of tin plate and other manufact¬
ures we received nearly *20,000,000 worth. The
tin deposits of California, North Carolina and
Georgia have been pushed to their utmost,
with the exception of the North Carolina de¬
posit, which i* a newly discovered one. lte
eently, however, an immense field of tin has
been found in the Black Hills. It is bettered
that this new field is practically inexhaustible
The tin is found in the granite region, and
was discovered by miners whp were prospect¬

I'OEORKn COFFEE.
More tliRn half the coffee sold is artificially
colored, aud the health officers of New York
have made some startling dimsoveriea. They
procured sample* of the coloring matter used,
Mid of the u.nroasted toans so tetatrd. They
found that the oaloring matter contained both
areenic- and lead, also chrome yellow, Prussian
bh*. yellow ochre, timber, Venetian red, lamp
black, gam Arabic, soapstone anil charcoal.
The dealers try to make the cheaper grade of
coffee resemble the genuine Java, which ha* a
yellow color produced by the long voyage.
Several of toe large coffee bouses m New York
claim that while they color their coffee they
use no injurious dye*. The matter will to
thoroughly investigated.

THE CHOLERA.
The periodical pestilence »carc i* .familiar to
everybody. TW# year the rumor* come, early.
Well defined cases of cholera are reported in
eastern Europe aud Asia, and at Marseille* and
other French port* active preventive measure*
have been taken. Now there m no seme in a
premature alarm, lint we have a long sum¬
mer before u*. and Egypt the nursery of the
dmease is giving it a terrible vitality and start¬

While medical men have their doubt* a* to the
pathology of cholera itself, there is no doubt
that its aiSies are famine, filth, cold and
dampness, and tlie first outbreak* in any coun¬
try are generally i 0 the alums of tha great
cities. When the jiestilence one* get* started,
however, every wayward breeze carries it into

WtlAT THE Bit EWE Its SAY.
For «>mo year* the temperance peo¬
ple have been getting the best of John
Barleycorn in a comparison of statistic*.
Tbis has stirred up the United States
Brewers’ association, and that body ha
recently published a queer volume enti¬
tled “The Real and Imaginary Effects of
Intemperance.” It is a statistical
sketch of tense interest The author
concludes from official figures in the m*
tnne department that intemperance is
deeteasfftg. in I87D the consumption
of distilled spirits in this country was
about five quarts per capita, and in 1880
it wits but tore© and a half. In addition
to this proof the book apeaka of the eua
tom of fifty years ago, when every house
kept liquor on hand, when all visitors
were given liquid refreshment*, and
when ail harvest hands considered a jug
of rum and water aa part of the refresh¬
ments to be furttished by their emp fryer.
Reports from fifty-four aeytil&u contain¬
ing 36,973 patients show that 2,588 in¬
mates were made insane by in temper
*nce, or less than seven per cent of the
whole number. That beer drinking
leads to spirit urmking is answered by
figures showing that in Munich where
the annual consumption of beer is 235
quarts per capita, out of 16,000 hospital
patients only twenty-one were sufferers
from alcoholism, That dranfcenesm is
the chief cause of poverty ia opposed by
the statement that, according to the
Massachusetts census, of 4,842 paupers
only 584 had been intemperate or the
children of intemperate parents The
Brewers’ association will have a big job
on hand if this statistical warfare is to
be kept up. When the medical men,
prison wardens and judges of the crimi¬
nal court are heard from, the temper¬
ance people will have the best of the
argument,

The (kTaa Highway.
Tlie steamer Chateau Margaux lost
ner rudder on the 6 th of March.
From that morning until the 22 d she
was sailing spoken by five steamers aud three
vessels. From some of these
vessels she received fresh provisions, and
to one of them she transferred many of
her passengers. Had there been suffi¬
cient reamm for abandoning the steamer
there would have boon no difficulty in
saving the all her people.
At time when the steamer Presi¬
dent was lost the ocean highway was
not the crowded thoroughfare that it now
is, and even when the City of Boston
was to send missing it was thought necessary
vessels in search of her. At
the present time there would be no need
to send in search of ft missing steamer
belonging atlantic to any one of the great trans¬
tie lines, for she would fee sure to
met or overtaken by some other
steamer in case of injury to her ma¬
chinery, jury, and, in the absence of such in¬
gjie could uot very well lie "miss
tog." The vast growth of tbe ocean
h cam fleet has undoubtedly increased
the danger of coBivion, hut, on the
other hand, it has. greatly increased the
chances that a vesssel in distress will be
sighted safety aisd relieved. There is thus
as well as danger in the crowded
ocean the balance path, and there is no doubt Shat;
inclines very decidedly to
the side of safety.—JV. Y. Times.
