[From the New Tork Bnn.]
In some of the New England village*
the curfew still tolls the knell of parting
dav at 9 o’clock in the evening, when
the virtuous villager is supposed to gel
him home and to bed. At 12 o’clock,
noon, the ringing of the same bell pro
claims to the village that nooning and
dinner time are come. Bed time and
dinner time are thus obligingly signalled
to the community; and in uome of the
Vermont towns it seems that public
proclamation of the state of the weather
is made at the expense of the town.
Some scientific person of Chelsea, in the
Green Mountain State, invites attention
to a plan "for signalling the Government
weather indications by steam whistles
and other means." The signal service
sends out six different varieties of pre
diction, anil the Vermont acientist pro
poses that the different predictions for
each day shall be disseminated among
the country folk remote from telegraph
oflioes, morning newspapers and bulletin
boards, by means of blasts of varying
length on steam aignal whistles. These
are tin six kipds of weather and the six
blasts:
"No. I. —Signifying fair or probably
fair weather for the next seventeen
hours.
"No. 2. Foul or probably foul
weather for the same period.
“No. 3. —Fair at first and changing to
foul before the end of the term.
"No. 4.—Foul and changing to fair.
“No. 6. —Doubtful, irregularly vari
able.
“No. 6.—Unseasonable frosts or cold
waves.
"No. 6 is given only as an occasional
supplement to someone of the other
five. The number to bo signalled is sent
to the engineer having charge of the
whistle. Alter the first long, unbroken
blast, given usually at about 7 o'clock a.
m., there is a pause of five seconds, then
for No. 1 a five-sooond blast, for No. 2
two such panses and blasts, threo for
No. 3, four for No. 4 and five for No. 5.
After the regular blasts (ouo of the first
five) anti another five-second pause, No.
G may bo given by five two-second
blasts with two-scoond pausos. Nos. 3
and 4 will hint at the probabilities for
the dnv after.”
So the romotfl farmer can lie alxxl, al
though wo aro afraid ho never ilooh Ho
ahed after aeven o'clock in tho morning,
look at the aignnl co<lo tacked on tho
wall, and wait for the long unbroken
blast and its miooessor. If it in aummer
aud a flve-scoond blant ih blown after a
pause of five seconds, ho can be assured
that it will bo safe to open tho hay that
morning; and if it ih a winter morning
when tho blast is blown, ho will prompt
ly sot the hired man to picking over tho
potatoes in tho oellar. And bo on
through the cede.
The new svHtcm has l>eon adopted in
the town of Randolph, where the signal
blasts are regularly given at 6:30 every
morning. Tho author of the plan bopoa
that the Holeotmon of other Vermont
towns will insert in the March meeting
warrants a proposal for the establish
ment of signal whistles. Aanybody
outside of Vermont who is Interested in
the plan may address suggestions about
it to Lock Box 22, Chelsea, Vt.

east of Arlington, Yt, One of them, a
Miss Sprague, was one day bitten
through the thumb by a |>et kitten be
longing to the family with which she

long time, but the wound finally healed
and was forgotten by everyone who
knew of it until Thursday night. Miss
Sprague and some Boston friends came

Miss Sprague’s birthday, and in a dance
which was to wind up the evening's en

struck the injured thumb agiuust a case

continued for several hours, she said that
that portion cf her thumb through
which the cat had bitten her was throb

Do You Know Him I
There was a man in our town, and he
wuh wondrous wise, for when ho marked
his prices down, ho then did advertise.
And when he saw hia trndo increase,
with all his might and main, he marked
etill lowor every price, and advertised
again.
And when ho advertised again, his
rivals stamped and tore, to see folks rush
with might aud main, to patronize that
store.
And while they sat in solitude, and
saw him custom in, that man behind
tho counter stood, aud raked the shek
els in.
And when lie raked the shekels in,
and saw his fort nun rising, ho took a
goodly lot of “tin,” and kept on adver
tising.
Each day a genuine snm he’d seek,

A prominent school book publisher
gives us a now idea of the province of
the newspaper. He says: “I sometimes
think that newspapers make men un
social. Indeed, I know they do. Men
no longer go to each other for informa

In the early days of civilisation, beforo
-he newspaper ora, men gathered to
gether as the Athenians did, anxious to
hear some new thing. In the early
days of this country the crossroads store
was the news centre, where men gath
ered in a social way to communicate the

Thousands Hastened to their Graves.
By relying on testimonials written in vivid
glowing language of some miraculous cures
mado by some largely puffed up doctor or
patent medicine has hastened thousand* to
their craves: the readers having almost in
sane faith that the same miracle will be per
formed on them, that these testimonials men

time hastening them to their graves. Al
though we have
Thonsands l'x>on Thousands !!!
of testimonials of the most wonderful cures,
voluntarily sent us, we do not publish them,
as thev do not make the cures. It is our medi
cine, flop Bitters, that make the cures. It
has never failed and never can. We will give
reference to any one for any disease similar
to their own if desired, or will refer to any
neighbor, as there is not a neighborhood in
the known world but can show its cures by
Hop Bitterrs.
A Losing Joke.
"A prominent physician of Pittsburg said
‘to a lad v patient who was complaining of her
‘continued ill health, and of his inability to
‘cure her, jokingly said: “Try Hop Bittersl”
‘The lady took it in earnest and used the Bit
‘ters. from which she obtained permanent
health. She now laughed at the doctor for
‘his joke, but he is not so well pleased with it,
‘as it cost him a good patient.
Fees of Doctors.
The fee of doctors at $3.00 a visit would
tax a man for a yeffr, andjin need of a daily
visit, over SI,OOO - a year for medical attend
ance alone! And one single bottle of Hop
Bitters taken in time would save the SI,OOO
and all the year's sickness.
Given np by the Doctors.
"Is is possible that Mr. Godfrey is up
and at work, and cured by so simple a reme

"I assure you it is true that he is entirely
cured, and with nothing but Hop Bitters, and
only ten days ago his doctors gave him upand
said he must die, from Kidney aud Liver
trouble!”
