General Evans nnd Mr. Atkinson
have signed the articles of agreement
for a series of spoeehy fving contests
to take place in all towss where a
good crowd can bo mustered.
The Democratic party stands
squarely pledged to the repeal of the
state hank tax. The platform reads:
“Wc recommend that the prohibi¬

Tb» newspaper# of the state stand

HON. WILLIAM VATES ATKINSON, Candidate for Governor.
A REMEDY FOB HOARDING.
The enormou* mid indeed, unprec¬
edented accumulation of money lock¬
ed up in the Associated Bank?*, fur
uifihes a strong argument iu favor of
a currency of larger volume and
greater elasticity. While the cry of
‘•scarcity Of money” is heard tbroug
out the country, these banks hold
over oue hundred millions of dollars
more than i* required by law! Doubt
lesi this vast accumulation is due
only in part to the policy of the
banks themselves—only so fur as
their restriction or refusal of “accom¬
modations” to business men and oth¬
er borrowers goes. Depositors con¬
tribute to swell the amount to such
great proportions. But, no matter
what agencies or influences have
brought about such a condition, the
fact that it exists at a time when
commerce and business of every kind
no badly needs the circulation of the
money thus locked up, calls for rem¬
edial measures.
The volume of money in circula¬
tion ought to be too large to be Urns
gore rued by this interest or design
of bankers and capitalists. When it
is the interest ot the class to make
money scarce and property and pro¬
duce consequently low and business
depressed, the help of the govern¬
ment kbouid not be extended to them,
but to the suffering masses whom
this policy injures. That is the situ¬
ation as existing at this time—that
the alternative demanding the choice
of the legislators. Either the repeal
of the prohibition of state banks or
the furnishing of a larger circulation,
treasury note or naiic.na! bank, is the
urgent need of every class except tho
rich hoarders.
The above is from tho Atlanta
Journal!
But whoM a-thunk it?
Has the Journal seen a vision ?
