Official Newspaper of the Sheriff, urdi
nary, Board of Commissioners of Roads
and Revenues and Board of Education of
Wayne County Georgia,
JESUP, 3A-, AUG. 8th, 1907.
The Sentinel hopes that every
citizen, tax payer and patron of
Jesup will read with care our
leading article .on the front page.
In it there is much food for
thought.
What Wayne county needs is a
school, where the common branch
es are taught iu every community.
Then also the County should have
a High School where those that
have completed the common
school courte can pursiie the high
er studies. Had Wayne such an
educational system, it would be
ideal.
The General Assembly of Geor
gia for the session of 1907 will ad
journ at about the end of next
week. There are hut two local
, bills ... , which . , Wayne county . •
in «
interested now pending
the acts to incorporate the towns
of Screven and Odum, both doubt
less, will become law before the
close ol tho session.
Every Sea Island Cotton
er Association. Iu organization
there is strength, ar.d the compar
atively few farmers who plant Sea
Island Cottou if properly organ
ized, can dictate to the speculators
any reasonable price thev wish
and get it. Therefore join the
Sea Island Cottou Growers Asso
ciatiou.
Quite a number of different
schools in Wayne county have
been lately added to the list of
those who in the proper march of
progress in educational lines have
ordered a supply of patent school
desks. This is a move in the right
direction, The Sentinel hopes
that ere long the old time high,
hard, home made will be a thing
of the past.
The Sentinel appreciated very
much that the Dublin Courier—
Dispatch printed our article from
Congressman Brantley. But as
this was a contribution to our 1
columns on special request, our
esteemed contemporary, that in
many ways has no superior in the
State, ought to have given some
credit to the Seutinei. Of course
we kuow this w f as an omission.
ot ' Education of
The
Wayne ccdliity lift* done a wise
thing iu authorizing the Commis
sioner of Education to borrow
money with which to pay the
teachers. There are'over uiurf
■
thousand dollars due the couuty
by the state, but this can not be
obtained until after this year’s
taxes are paid. In the meantime
many teachers who have already
eompleted their work are forced
•to wait tor their pav and this is
Certainly an injustice. A few dql
lars paid for interest on [money
with which to pav these Salaries
is money well spent. It any lab
orer is worthy of his hire, the
.
.teacher is one who should be prop
erly paid after completing a
“month’s work. The board did
right iu arranging so that
^'teachers of the couuty may
ceive their money sood.
Don’t forget 1hat a small tax of
each year to the school fund of
the county; that of/this the Rail
, roadg p a y one-haif, local corpor
atiohs and large land interests
one-fourth, aod the other oue
j fourth is divided among 1400 small
tax payers in the county. Thus
the men who have the greatest
■ number of children, who are usu
j | fl| , " fc he poor mon and pay9 bnt
IRHo taxes, will be benefited ,
most.
The experiments made by - Dr.
G. W. Drawdy iu testing whether
Wayne couuty soil is suitable for
the cultivation of tobacco have
been a success iu every particular.
This should induce a large num
ber of our farmers to plant a
patdh at tho next season. It they
would do this and learn how to
cultivate this weed they would
soou have an important commer
cial item in our local financial af
fairs.
