LOAFERS RETREAT
(Since the benches near the Jesnp Drug Company’s store were er.
ected, Jesup’s poet, Mr. A. T. Ingram, was forced to call on the muse
forthe following:)
Brother, ’tis here in the cool of the quiet shade
’Neath friendly boughs of the sycamore trees
On the old wooden benches all roughly made
That we meet with our friends in twos and threes.
And we hold here a court or a joint debate,
Lavishing logic or a fool’s advice;
Discussing the weather or crops that are late,
Blasting a charter all in a thrice.
■ -w*
We delve into ethics and morals and sins
And talk of farming and fishing and fun;
Of how to milk cows and attain other ends,
And how a man feels when facing a gun.
We settle the destiny of old Japan,
And figure the route to the far North pole.
And how to keep even with our fellow-man
And how we should live to better the soul.
We call into question some fair and good name,
And toll here the secrets we’ve sworn to keep,
Lie to a brother, be our sorrow and shame
Aud blacken the heart until angels weep.
We here venture to set the plan that is best
For our moral and religious cir.eers;
We vote that there are few past l he crucial test
And the tew who will pass by ihe cup that cheers.
We condone here the sins by self committed;
Kevel in the thought of another’s fall;
Pass on the case where we are most unfitted,
Forgetting the Cod who shall judge us all.
0! the good that we speak, it shall live always:
But the evil we speak, it lives as long;
Then beware that we sow where the sowing pays
Lest we sell our souls for a trifling song!
