On Things That Men Need Now
Ask the young men about town. They know and will tell
you just what place this store occupies in the realm of men’s
furnishings. They know, as have their fathers before them,
that our men’s togs are just what they should be—so distinctive
that one could easily spot the good-dressers who buy their
furnishings exclusively at H., J. & Co.’s. L
And because we are the recognized leaders, the big price cuts
on seasonable goods in this department during the annual inven=
ory sale are oL unusual interest to men.

of his head, swell patent,
shoes, and the latest conceit in
overcoat line, and the other a man of
forty or more yea vs, with hia hands
stuck in the pockets of his trousers
that bagged at tbe knees, with a
slouch hat, and no overcoat at all, met
on one of the main comers of Alba
ny's business section Monday.
“Brace up, old man," said the
younger one, as he struck the other
a sounding slap on tho shoulders,
“and look like n man. This is New
ear’s day, the first day of the year
'.906, a day for celebration, for pleas
ant looks, smiles for everybody, and
for short intervals * between drinks.
This is a day for festivity, for re
joicing, the day on which one has no
enemies, and everybody the best of
friends.
"Old Father Time has chased 1905
to the woods, and 1900 now sits on
tho throne. Why look ot It cherlly!
Think for a moment what the new
king may do for you. He may build
you n pnlnee, cure your gout, pay
your debts, limber us your limbs, and
renew your youth There Is no tell
ing.
“And remember 1905 wns not a
bad boy at nil. Think what, he brought
Albany! Go out and listen and see
the mighty surging of the waters at
the dam, nnd see the Immense power
generated there to operate the city's
great and growing industries. Look
nt her paved sldownlks and streets.
Observe the cheerful smiles of the
merchants In striking contrast to that
funeral grin of yours.”
"You. you ought to bo run out of
town. You'ro a regular old sorehead,
a traitor to your city, a pessimist, an
eye sore to tho city In which you live.
Cheer up. A happy new year to you
nnd a glorious Fourth of July.
"Get In the way of happiness nnd
good cheer. Get caught in the meshes
of prosperity. Lose yourself in tho
woods of pence. Drown yourself In
the sea of good will. Do nnyt.hlng to
get rid of that look of yours.
"It’s now year's day, and it lias
been a long time since the lust drink.'
The downcast and more ngcd*man
took tho good natured badinage with
a look thnt would make tho average
dyapeptlo feel nshnmed of hlmsel”.
“Now, you're a nice one,” he said
nfter somo time.'' to he telling me
about tho glorious new yenr. aren’t
you. It Is nil so nice to try to paint
the Imaginary lily and to talk about
wlmt. 1995 brought us and what 190fi
might bring us.
“I have a poor memory, not re
membering so many things of the
nnst, and I’m a poor prophet, not car.
ing much to know what happens In
the future, but I can tell you a few
thlugs.
“1905 didn't feed the children. It
wns the sweat o’ my brow. It didn’t
clothe wlfey. and It didn't pay rent. I
remember these things very distinct
ly. 1905 didn’t kill out the pestiferous
bill collectors, either. The wrinkles of
my coat tall tell thnt story.
“1005 didn’t keep those noisy brawl
ing brats of mine from celebrating
Christmas day ti week, tearing up
the drums nnd horns that I, like a
fool, gave them for Christmas, paying
for them tn cold, hard earned cash,
and from furnishing a vocal concert
and a lung contest at night, when the
ernzy toys were taken away from
them.
“1900 arrived today, all right I
agree with you about that. But old
Father Time either brought the
youngster with not n cent in his
pockets or else the kid is mighty stin
gy and won’t pay the debts of his
oldest brother, 1906.
I didn't see 1906 near when the
bill collectors came for me. He didn’t
offer me a helping hand, with a purse
in It, when he saw my pitiful state
of financial embarrassment, and tho
utter emptiness of my pocketbook.
Not he.
”1900 wasn't present to help me out
when 1 told wlfey about that hat I
wasn’t able to pay for, and that I
didn’t know where supper was com
ing from, and when I received one of
those confounded tongue alshtngB, 1906
was absent, or he wouldn’t have lash
od the full twelve months.
‘1906 wasn't there to plead with the
landlord not to run me out, and with
tho merchant not to foreclose, and the
grocer to hold oft one month later,
and the shoe dealer to let me have
the shoes. 1906 didn’t start off very
auspiciously, .from my standpoint.
“And here comes another collector.
From the fury of them and from tho
knowjall snlckerlngs of you Irrespon
sible youths,, the Lord, hereafter deliv
er me! Hero's hoping that the first
day of file year comes only once In
ten years hereafter, nnd thnt I’ll ho
among'those absent when It • does
come."
Furious Fighting.
“For seven years," writes Geo. W
Hoffman, of Hnrper, Wash., “I had a
bitter, battle with chronic stomach
and liver trouble, but at last I won,
und cured my diseases, by the use
of Electric Bitters. I unhesitatingly
recommend them to all, and don’t in

Several days ago Mr. Harold J. Von
Weller left Albany for Brunswick,
his former home, ostensibly for the
purpose of giving attention to busi
ness matters.
When he returned yesterday, . he
was not alone. Mrs. Harold J. Von
Weller accompanied him.
Until Monday afternoon, Mrs. Von
Weller was Miss Charlotte Turner, of
Brunswick. The attachment between
the young people dates back some
time, having been formed during Mr.
Von Weller’s residence in the City by
the Sea. When he came to Albany to
make his homo, the bond was not
broken.
The friends of Mr. Von Weller
here had not been taken into his
confidence, and they were according
ly taken completely by surprise when
he returned yesterday with his bride.
The marriage of Miss Turner to
Mr. Von Weller was solemnized at
St. Jude’s Episcopal church, Bruns
wick, at 3:30 o’clock Monday after
noon. It was a very quiet affair, the
ceremony being vHnessed only by a
few friends of the young couple. Im
mediately after the wedding Mr. and
Mrs. Von Weller left for n short trip
to several points in the state, and
reached Albany ea-ly yesterday after
noon. They are now at home at the
residence of Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Von
Weller on Society street.
Mr. Harold J. Von Weller has been
in Albany but a short time, but has
made many friends who extend hearty
congratulations to him and his happy
bride, who will be warmly welcomed
to Albany.
