'the servant'
PROBLEM . . .
Almost every housewife has been ren
dered helpless and unhappy by some
feature of the servant problem. Cook,
maid or butler left suddenly, without
warning, and it was impossible to im
mediately fill their places. There were
meals to be ordered, messages to be
sen!, errands to be run and a thousand
and one household duties to be perform
ed. A servant, silent but faithful, who
could cancel your social engagements,
order your meals and aid you in the
^search for new help, would have relieved the situation of its hor
ror. Surely the need of a telephone occurred to you at such a
time? It performs these small duties with a promptness and sat
isfaction that the most competent servant could not equal. Its
very presence is a relief to the mind in the knowledge that it is
constant and tireless in its duty.

In the first part of the Donnelly &
Hatfield Magnificent Minstrels the set
ting Is such as to suggest the min
strels of centuries ago clasping hands
across the Infinite space o* time with i
the minstrels of today. Three mas.
sivt stairways load to tlio stage and
th« embellishments are regal In their,
splendor. At the opening of the spec
tacle, alter the musicians have march
ed In, there appea-s a troupe of min
strels In the costumes of medlaeyal
ages, and songs are sung with the
same spirit and dash that character
ised the minstrel of early history. Oth.
ers appear In the costumes of still
earlier days and these are.In white
face. When they too, have sung, the
iniiiRtrel of today makes his appear-
nnce—the black faced comedian and
dancer nnd the significance o' the ev
olution of minstrelsy Is apparent. The 1
setting is one of 'he most beautiful
ever seen In an entertainment, of this
character, and the electrical effects
are a revelation In lighting. Tlio
Btage Is filled with beautiful stntuary
all of which Is brilliantly Illuminated |
and the stage is successively flooded ,
with soft lights of varying tints, mak
ing a most striking scene.

Railroad Rates, In. the United States
Less Than Half Europe'a.
For each article *be traffic manager
of the railroad trtOB to make a rate
that will ennble the owner to sell It
In distant markets In competition with
similar articles from other places. At-
temps are also made to create new
traffic by offering rates which will In
duce men to engage In some business
not previously carried on. Rates mado
In this manner must vary widely for
different articles. A man cannot afford
to pay the same rate for shipping a
ton of coal worth $9, a hundred miles
that ho could pay for shipping.a ton
of furniture worth $75 tho same dis
tance.
The familiar maxim that the rail
roads charge what tie truffle will bear
Is n half truth; tho other linlf of tho
truth Is that railroads always try to
moke a rate that will Induce the
movement of the greatest obtainable
volume of traffic.
A rallrond’s largest expense consists
In Its original Investment. In track,
stations nnd rolling stock nnd In keep
ing these tn repair. Tills expense ex
ists independently of the use made
of the railroad. It costs very little
more to run a long train Ilian a short,
one, and the proportionate expense
of running many trains Is lower than
that o.‘ running few. Hence the profit
from carrying a large amount of traf
fic at a low rate la very much great
er than tho profit from carry-a small
amount nt high ratos. This Is express
ed In another railwny maxim, that tile
rate varies with the density of the traf
fic. The rate decreases as the densi
ty of the traffic Increases.
It Is the ambition of every railway
manager to enlarge his traffic, nnd
consequently the profits of Ills road,
by finding wider markets for Ills par
trons, and by enabling them to reach
these markets through a reduction of
rates. The result Is that the railway
rates In the United States have al
ready decreased and are now much
the lowest. In the world. In Great
Britain tho average rate for hauling
a ton of freight a hundred miles Is
$2.35; In France $2.02; In Austria
$1.88; in Germany $1.76: In Russia
$1.70; in the United .States ft Is only
70 cents.
