L LEADING OPTICIAN, 1 OF AFRICA. One of the Irwin County Colony Recently Return ed Tells of Bitter Ex perience. From the Ocilla Star. I.ast Saturday Hal Scott, his wife, Rllodil Scott, their three children, their daughtei-ln huv and her son, arrived In Ocilla from the west coast of Africa. In 1902 Howell Fuller 1 and eight others returned from Africa. They wore part of the little colony‘o? fifty- six negroes who left Ocilla January 1, 1902, for (he west coast, of Africa, and through, the aid of white friends were enabled to return the same year. Hal Scott and Ills family returned after an absence of about four years in tile Dark Continent! A Star representative had a short talk with Hal Wednesday. He Is a preacher and has always had the reputation of being truthful. We have not space for the picture he drew of his fatherland, but will give the most Important points. He said: “For thirty, years It was In my head to go to Africa, and when I be came able I went. After nearly four years over there I am prepared to say, emphatically, that I do not like the climate, the people or the coun try. The natives are low In civiliza tion and will steal every opportunity they get. We couldn’t understand them, and of course didn’t like them, "Bishop Turner and Booker T. Washington, who are advising the negroes to go to Africa, west or south, are doing their race a great injury—those of them, at least, who take their advice. When they go there they will find employment hard to get. Farm labor is paid from 12 to 25 cents a day, while bacon is 25 cents a pound, flour $16 a barrel, and everything else in proportion. “Yes, I have eaten monkeys. Shot them out of trees just like we do squirrels, mid their meat Is very sweet—better to the taste than ba- cln, though t could hardly eat it for thinking of the monkey. “Soon after we reached Africa we were attacked with what the natives called ’John Bull fever,’ and, first and last, this killed twenty-six out of the fllty-six that le’t Ocilla. “Hunger was no stranger to us. Many a night my wife wet her pillow with tears crying for bread. Caaava and rice were used for bread, arid wo had to depend on monkeys and other wild beasts for our meat. The swamps cover all the land there as thick, or., more so, than are the swamps along the 'Cooehee, and It was very difficult to get within gun shot of the wild animals. "I am done with Africa forever. Old Irwin will be my home till I die, and I and my family are rejoicing to be once more among our good white friends. “With the nine detained In London, we are all out of Africa except five, who are scattered about along the west coast, some of them six hun dred miles apart, but all living so far as I know. "England Is trying to grow cotton In South Africa, and she wants la borers who understand cultivating It. I desire to warn my race against the schemes to induce them to go there, where the wages will he small, the climate destructive of health, and where they will have to work for white men Just as they do here, only they will work them nearly to death and pay them wages hardly sufficient to sustain life. Better slay here and work for the people you know, who treat you kindly and will not let you suffer If they know It.” Hal can not say enough against Africa. It has been a costly lesson to him In several ways, but as he had been suffering with the “ever for thirty years, the cure could be made ’only in the way it was. He does not believe his race will ever return to Africa. A Grim Tragedy - Is dally enacted in thousands of homes, as death claims, In each one, another victim of Consumption or Pneumonia, But when Coughs and Colds are properly treated, the trag edy is averted. F. G. Huntley, of Oklahoma, Ind., writes: "My wife had the consumption, and three doc tors gave her up. Finally, she took Dr. King’s New Discovery for Con sumption, Coughs and Colds, which cured her, and today she is well and strong.” It kills the germs of all dis eases. One dose relieves. Science, o? Bel! ttlngliig. It was Sunday mornbvt. and the hell’ ringer had Just finished ringing the chimes that called the godly to church. “Bell ringing Is n science. Did you know that?” he Bald. "It Is called campanology, and there are abstruse and technical terms In It, like ‘Kent treble bob,’ 'Stcdman cinques,’ ‘double court bob,’ ‘dodges,’ ‘noils' and 'stln- goos.' Each of these terms defines a certain phase or kind of bell ringing. In England there Is a society, the Cen tral Council of Bell Ringers, tlint every cnmpanologlBt desires ardently to be long to. Maybe you think bell ringing Is simple? Do you know wbnt a peal Is? A peal In ringers’ parlance Is a Berles of 5,000 changes rung upon a chime, no change occurring more than tnce.”—New York Press.
