New Orleans, Jan. 13.—The Liver pool market opened as expected with a quiet tone prevailing, and closed at a net advance of from one to two points over yesterday. Sales of 8,000 bales at a decline of one point was good, considering the short day. The Bentlment. in the American mar ket was decidedly better, and the opening both here and In New York was strong and active, with prices rul ing higher. It was generally (reported that shorts were covering In New York nnd that the firmness there was. attributable to the strength displayed by our market, which in turn was only reflecting the very much improved condition, In so far as demand and inquiry were concerned, of the spot market here. In reviewing events of tho past week we find that conditions as whole have been noil-impressive. The spot market, upon which so much de pends, 1ms remained more or less In active, in spite of the /'net, that the Inquiry has shown an almost daily improvement. The presence in this city of an enormous number of farmers from all sections of the South In meeting as sembled, while having no immediate effect on the market, lends impetus to a more bullish feeling. The visible Biipply of yesterday was construed'as more favorable to bears than otherwise, and although the amount of cotton taken by spinners during the week was well over the previous statement, it did not com pare favorably with preceding years. The concensus of opinion seems to he that the market only needs a sub stantial spot demand to* materially Improve. GIBERT & CLAY. Hutton & Co. suggest; “Those that have been selling cotton below 1114c will, Inside of thirty days, be glad to purchase It at f214c or better. We be lieve that the market Is on the eve of a big advance.” The Liverpool tinues good. spot demand con- Wasn’t It about this time last year that the advance below 7 cents start ed, and did not culminate until It had reached 1114c? Well, it has started this time at the 1114c level. It "per ambulates without articulation” where It will culminate. Reported on the floor yesterday that- Sully has again turned bullish. New York wives; buying heavily.” "Price brokers The question the traders are all asking over and over is: “Will Wall Street lake up March cotton?” Hoadley and his crowd say they will buy cotton whether It goes up or down.
