THE ALBANY DAILY HERALD! TUESDAY, JANUARY 16, 1906. “I don't suppose,” said nn Albanian, to a representative of The Herald yesterday morning, “that anyone has as much confidence In Albany and faith In Albanians as I have. “I can't help believing that In five years this city will be as large as Macon Is now, and that In tqn years we will be calling Maconltes 'rubes.’ “Albany has grown so wonderfully of late that my confidence, great even as it was before, has been strength ened. It doesn't require a very great stretch of Imagination now to make Albany appear as large and metropol itan as the capital of our state. "I stood on the fourth floor of the Dnvls-Exclmnge Bank Building a few days ago, and really, had l not known better, I might have thought I was In a metropolis. "There beneath me were Innumer able drays and other kinds of trans fer wagons, passing anjl repasslng where Washington and Broad streets intersect. The streets were filled with a throng 0.’ pedestrians, of men run ning against each other In their haste, a dear sign of prosperity and of good business: of shopping women, hurry ing to and fro, bent on finding bar gains; o' children of all sixes and ages, and of workmen and capitalists, all elbowing each other as they tramped the worn streets. “In the streets, I could see the cabs, broughams, coupes, and car riages, all rubber-tired, and running along smoothly on paved Btreets. “Go back a year ago, and where were your paved streets, and where were your cabs? There weren’t any. Nobody In Albany hardly dared dream -of them. They are here now, and there Is always talk of more coming. “Only one thing did my Imagination have to call up. That was a trolley lino. The track was there, but the cars, and the peculiar noise, were only creatures of an excited and strong imagination, conveniently brought In to use. "Albany Is on an unprecedented boom. She has all the essentials of a city, and she is bound to be one. You can’t keep a good man down, and neither can you keep a. whole city of good men and women down."
