NEW ORLEANS COTTON LETTER,
(By W Iro to Clark & Co A
New Orleans, Jan. 24. — Judging
from the large spot sales of 14,000
bales reported this morning from Liv
erpool, it- would be natural to infer
that the figures issued yesterday by
the government on ginnings were not
up to the expectations bf the foreign
market. The same assertion is
brought out as well by the action of
options in being only 12 to 14 points
down on the opening of American
rings, when a larger decline was in
reality due. Throughout the day the
foreign market rallied firm and
steady, reflecting nn improved senti
ment In favor of the trade, and closed
with about 9 points loss under yester
day. Cables expressed the opinion
that the decline was natural and mo
mentary, hut entertained a more hope-
fill feeling for the future. Manchester
reported both yarns and cloths quiet
hut steady.
In our own market, liquidation,
while not assuming large proportions,
was nevertheless very evident. At the
same time, however, a limited fresh
buying set In, doubtlessly inspired by
the reported improved condition of tho
various spot markets, and for a time
contract offerings were readily ab
sorbed, which kept, the market steady
with prices moderately higher.
To our mind the threshing-out pro
cess which has been strongly in evi
dence for the last two days has ma
terially benefited the existing temper
of the market. We do not assume to
say, however, that this process is by
any means ended, and it is easily pos
sible that any advances will he met
and checked by larger and freer of
ferings. There is nothing, moreover,
In connection with the movement to
encourage any decided bearish opin-
The little bears are as bearish as
ever, but the mighty Grizzl/ is not
growling a bit.
Our opening was steady at 3 to' 4
points advance. Weld was a good
buyer.
Early cables from Liverpool said:
“Demand good and market looks like
gold; buy on this break.”
Futures may come and go, vise and
fall, hut the strength of spots—like
money—is the only thing that co.unts.
The “finish” is plainly in sight for
sellers atTKesp figures.
All Europe put a bullish construc
tion on tho ginners.
New Orleans wired: “There is a
much better feeling in market this
morning. The old-time hulls have not
changed their opinions, and we hear
Southern and Eastern mills are trying
to .pick UP c °tt°n on this decline.”
The market should he bought on
scale down. This plan will bring good
results, before the flowers bloom in
the spring.
The compress at Jackson, Miss., to
gether with 10,000 bales, went up in
smoke last night. Three thousand
bales were burned at Norfolk.
The decline failed to bring out any
actual cotton' in the South.
The market was as dull as the av
erage market circular.
Brown, of New Orleans, said he
would still bet the final ginners would
not show 10,300,000 bales of 500
pounds ginned on ,the crop.
