NEW ORLEANS COTTON LETTER (By Wlro to Olnrk &,Oo.) New Orleans, Jan. 25. — Liverpool responded in full this morning to ex* pectations and opened steady 9 points down and closed rather quietly with prices barely changed from the open ing. The .mo^t encouraging news of the moment, however, is to be found In the excellence of the foreign spot situation. Yesterday the sales, 14.001) bales, ly.Qre considered extremely good but today’s sales of 15.000 bales have rather surprised the • general public, and have lent a somewhat more hope ful feelfog to the situation. In con nectlon with this, it. Is extremely im portant to note the very much im proved shipping parity now existing between the Liverpool market and our own, from which it may bo Inferred that export business now long dormant will soon Yeawnken to greater activity and which of itself, being u healthy factor, will stimulate a larger volume of trade in /fields when tho greatest expectations are due. Cables, on the other hand, wero not of such an encouraging nature, and rather seemed expectant of further de clines in the absence of speculation and In consequence of the reported quietness of some of the trade centerft. In our own market, tho opening was very Rteady, though somewhat quiet. It was evident from the apparent read iness to sell, that the general Hquida- ♦»nn nrevioufdy noted had about run its course and yet the absorbing pow er of those bulllshly inclined seemed to be enual to the occasion and appar ent declines were firmly checked. Taken all In nil, the market, duo to the somewhat drastic evetiing-up pro cess that It lias lately gone through Is npw in a very much healthier po sition than it was a few days past. New York was reported to be ham mering tlie market at every oppor tunity. but no such state of - affairs was materially reflected in this nrlce fluctuation for values held very steady In the face of all such reported drives. For the present we still feel that fur ther llouidatlon will In nil probability ensue before the market will have found its equilibrium and the substan tial basis of trade having been estab lished. it will more eagerly respond to the bettered conditions, Indications of which we rather expect to see in tomorrow’s week-end statements of crop movements, supply, etc. The time does not seeip propitious to take n determined stand on either side of the market or an extended price change. Hence scalping operations should prove tho * most profitable course to pursue. GIBERT & CLAY. "I understand there are some bulls In Southwest (feorgia who will eat out of one’s 'hand.”—Barney Fagan. The sporting editor of The Herald gets numerous letters from Mr. J. W. Thomas, who has the franchise of the Albany baseball team for tho coming season. Mr. Thomas’s letters contain Interesting stuff for the fans always, but his latest letter has something of more than usual Interest for the la dies. Mr. Thomas writes that at a recent meeting of the managers of the Geor gia State League the uniforms for the Aovenjl teams were adopted. Now, Mr. Thomas, offers a season ticket to the ball games in Albany to the lady over 1 fi .years of ago who guesses most nearly ns to the style of the uniform adopted for the Albany club. The color of the uniform, tho color and shane of the c«ps. the color of the stori'lne*. the style of lettering on the shirts, and all the details of the uni form must be described. To the lady who the com mittee decides has written the best description, the season ticket will be awhrdod. ' President Thomas writes that he Pas now signed a full team for Al bany and thnt he lias a bunch of play ers who will he able to “do stunts”, when tho season opens. In a fow days Mr. Thomas will come to Albany and nq«is out some ’ dope” to the Albany fans, enough', he believes, to hold them until the practice season opens. In the meantime,-the guessing con-, test will be going on to keep un the interest among the ladies.
