Again Liverpool refused to follow the decline. Due 9 down, she came only 3 and took 8,000 bales on Satur day. Our opening was extremely tame, considering the strength shown abroad. \\ It Is painfully evident that many stop orders are still In the market. H. B. Claflin denied there had been ahy reduction In cotton goods. The demand for spots will increase as the market declines. Some "sharks/' acting supposedly for the Price interests, sold 20,000 March on the opening. It had the de sired effect. Harvie Jordan appears very confi dent the South will not weaken. In England severe cold generally kills a good ranuy people. In certalD parts of North America cold still more severe puts new life Into them. It re quires no argumentation to show that there must bo a definite reason for this. The chief reason la that English cold Is mostly damp, while In North Amer ica It Is mostly dry. There is the great est difference .In the world betwoou dry olr and damp air. The former Is usu ally air pure and simple, possessing a full quantity of oxygon and oftou charged highly with ozone. The latter consists of air mixed with the vapor of water. Whcu the former air, fully oxygenated, Is breathed It stimulates more powerfully than chanmague. The .„..«r. less oxygenated and charged with vnpor of wator, not only docs not stimulate, hut depresses.—Public Opin ion. I'n.tn'M Wonderful Volvo. Mine. Her delight was the bravura style of orna ment, and where the composer lmd not been sufficiently liberal In bestowing ornamentation on her part she invented cnvntinas of her own and used them with such effect that they were gener ally regarded ns the best part of her singing. It showed its owner to have been a tall, well formed man, with an aver age skull and a facial angle of eighty- five degrees. The antiquity of this skel eton, known as the Mentone man, Is undoubted. His hones are assoelatcil with those of the cave lion, cave bear and other extinct anlmalB. All the bones were In place, surrounded by flint Implements and the remains of nnlmals which the man probably had killed. Twenty-two perforated teeth, which may have formed a chaplet, lay by bis head. These bones, with the Dutchman's skull found In a cave near Engls, are the oldest specimens known of humnn remains and go far to prove Uint prehistoric races were well fur nished with brain power. The Mcnnlitw of sympathy. It was a clever Frenchwoman who said: "Those who have suffered much are like those who know many lan guages. They have learned to under stand nml to he understood by many. It is an Impossibility to fully sympa thize with another's experience unless It lias been at some time one’s own. In trouble or grief we turn Instinctive ly to some one whom we know has been through the snmo experience. It Is the old Immnn longing for compan ionship that shows Itself. Tho feeling Is strong within us that she will feel and know with ice. Therein lies the meaning of sympathy,” The YiIbIhIpp'h UcapouMe. v well known minister of a kirk In i.iasgaw was one day passing along the High street when ho was aeeostcd by n crowd of street gnmlus, one of whom said mischievously, but with be coming gravity, "D'ye ken. minister, the de'll is deed?" The minister made uo Immediate response, but on the whole crew reiterating the cry, "The de’il's deed! The de'U’s deed!" he turned and, raising his outstretched hands, ns If to pronounce a blessing, reported. "Ach, ye pulr leetle faithless bairns!” A Triple CoinHilvni'c, A I’orresimuueut of tho Loudon Standard relates the following triple coincidence, taken from an old manu script diary, dated 1&2, lu which a relative quotes from r.ti "old journal:" "In the year 1<HM, on Di e. 5, a boat on the Monal (Mcnai strait, lu north Wales) crossing that sirait, over which a bridge has slneo been built, with eighty-one passengers, was upset, and only one passenger, named Hugh Wil liams, was saved. On tho same date, lu the year 1785, was upset another boat, containing about sixty passen gers, of whom ull perished excepting one, whose name was Hugh Williams. On Aug. fi, 1820, n third boat met with tho snme disaster, with twenty-five passengers only, and nlf perished with the exception of one, whose name was Hugh Williams." / 1 Mid-Winter Stove Sale I We are having a real Clearance Sale of Heating Stoves.
