THE CENTRAL RAILROAD TO SPEND $40,000 IN IMPROVING, ITS TERMINAL FACILITIES HERE-OTHER RAILROAD IMPROVEMENTS ASSURED-AN ELECTRIC CAR LINE. Mr. J. A. Betjeman, secretary ot the Albany Business League, has been busy down at Savannah during the last two or three days, and it appears from reports made in the Savannah papers that he has accomplished a good deal for Albany. The Savdnnah News of yesterday says: “Arousal with the‘spirit of progress prevalent At Albftpy, the railroads en tering that thriving city seem to have entered Ipto a conspiracy of improve ment. “The Central of Georgia Railway has agreed to expend $40,000 for the im provement. of Its terminal property at Albany; the Atlantic Coast Line Is spending $35,000 in the construction of a new freight depot and the enlarge ment of Its freight yaj’ds,; the Sea board Air Line and the Albany North ern railways have just spent above $7,000 Increasing their facilities and are making an outlay of several thou sands more for the same purpose; the Georgia Northern railway has just completed the erection of. an iron bridge acros the Flint river and now enters the union passenger station over its own tracks, and has made ex tensive purchases for freight termin als along the river front. . -.“Mr. J. A Betjeman, representing the-Business Men’s League of Albany, has been in Savannah the last two days conferring with the officials of the Central, the Atlantic Coast Line and the Seaboard relative to affairs alidad at Albany. He also visited the mayor and offices of the commercial bodies. Mr. Betjeman was in confer ence yesterday with General Manager Molse, of the* Central, and after the cpnference stated that Mr. Molse had authorized him to make public the statement, that the Central ' would spend $40,000 improving its facilities at Albany. The work Is to begin ns soon as matorial and labor can he got ten together. The money will be used on^pn increase in trackage capacity in the Central yards, in the erection of a round house and turn table and ad ditions to’ the freight depot and a gen eral reconstruction of the existing property. Great Business Activity. “The Albany Northern railway ts irganging) to extend Its line more than sixty miles ip a southerly direction. ‘The activity among the railroads,’ said Mr. Betjeman, ‘is only a reflection of the business activity in Albany and the territory tributary. The business men of Albany completed a thorough organization for the development of their city January 16, and are working out a number of problems of general Interest.’ “Mr. Betjeman called on the Savan nah Board of Trade, the Chamber of Commerce and Hoa. Herman Myers •ind put them In touch with the spirit of the organization, and some of the wqrk which they have in hand. He says he met with a hearty response from the Savannah organizations, and expressed himself as gratified with the spirit of co-operation. . “Mr. Betjeman said that a portion of his conference with the railway of ficials was for the purposb of getting better train service to Albany. He says he is assured that his visit will be instrumental in accomplishing re sults. and thinks this will be of bene fit to Savannah merchants in working that territory. The Seaboard has just put on- additional passenger service and a general improvement on all the roads is expected. Savannah Capital Interested. “Mr. Betjeman conferred with Col. Quinn In regard to the work on the Flint-river, and a definite line of op eration has been mapped out which will be recommended to the Albany League. “Mr. Betjeman says there has re cently been developed a magnificent water power which is already being Jused by the local factories, but still a bountiful surplus is left. It Is hoped by the citizens of Albany that this may j'be used by a street car company. Mr. j Betjeman said he had talked with men in Savannah who had the capital to establish a system of street railways in Albany, and he was encouraged to know that they regarded the proposi tion with favor. “Mr. Betjeman goes to Atlanta to day. He will confer with the express people in .regard to establishing an express line between. Albany and Cor- dele. From Atlanta he will &o North to use his endeavors for the location of a manufacturing enterprise in Al bany.” The Savannah Press of Saturday afternoon tells substantial the same story as the above, £s follows: “Mr. A. J. Betjeman, representing the Albany Business League, whose presence in Savannah w f as noted in the Press several days ago, announced this morning that at a conference with officials of the Central railroad here tills afternoon arrangements would be completed by which the Central rail road would spend the sum of $40,000 In Albany for terminals and other im provements. . . “While here Mr. Betjeman has con ferred with Savannah capitalists with the view of interesting them in the starting of an electric street railway system irt - Albany. The city has a power plant with abundant reserve power which is gained from the Flint river which would he available for this purpose. A number of local peo ple are already interested and most of the material has been bought, says Mr. Betjeman. y Has Other Onje^p. “Another reason for Mr. Betjeman’s visit to Savannah was to arrange with the Southern Express Gompany to put on a service on the Albany &. North ern railroad. Mr. Betjeman was dis appointed in not finding the proper officials here and he will meet them in Atlanta. “Mr. Betjeman desired to interest the committee of congress in making a trip to Albany when they visit Geor gia. He is also charged with the duty of investigating paving materials as well as sidewalks and other matters of interest to the Albany municipal government.” ✓ ATTENTION ELKS!
