yesterday, and he again took occasion
to allude to the continued attacks of
Hon. Hoke Smith upon Ills brother,
Mr. Albe.-t Howell. In thlj connec
tion Mr. Howell said: ' .
“If I had any charges to mnke
against Ills brother, by which I
thought my candidacy would be bene
fited, I would be courageous enough to
face him like a man and say, ’Sir, ns
a brother of a candidate for governor
you have been guilty of unprofession
al or Illegal conduct, and I specify
thus, and thus, and thus; your shoul
ders are broad enough to bear your
own burdens, and, ns man to man, I
give you opportunity tu reply, Instead
of dodging behind the cowardly sub
terfuge of holding your brother re
sponsible for things wlili which he has
nothing to do.’
“That’s what I would say to Mr.
Smith’s brother If I was mean enough,
and cowardly enough, and unmanly
enough, to resort to such a miserable
subterfuge, even though I had ground
to do so.
“And yet. bold bluffer that he Is,
he hasnt’ either the manhood or the
courage to say to my brother, ‘Sir, you
have been guilty of unprofessional
conduct—you have done that which
no lawyer has a right to do, and I
charge you thus, and thus, and thus.’
“Why doesn’t he do It? Because
he has neither the physical courage
nor the moral manhood to stand up
and have such a lie—If he were to tell
It—rammed down his throat by ns
brave, as bright and as manly a hoy
ns was ever the brother of man—an
attorney whose professional record Is
unimpeachable — a friend whose loy
alty has never 1 een questioned — a
man whose word Is as good as his
bond, and a soldier whose shield Is
ever upon his breast for the defense
of Ills friends and the support of Ills'
convictions—a shield which never yet
has'been touched by the envious darts
of this man who assails from ambush,
and, like a coward, dodges under cov
er when brought face to face with
a demand for specifications of his In
sinuations of wrongdoing."
