Birmingham People Now In Charge of the Work on Washington Street The paving work on Washington street is being done this week by an almost entirely different force of workmen than were employed pre viously. It is generally known that the Southern Concrete and Construction Co., of which Mr. J, F. Harris is man ager, secured the contract for the work, and it has been under the super vision of the manager that the work until Monday has been done. On Monday the work changed hands. A firm in Birmingham was sub-letted the contract by the Savan nah firm. This firm brought Its own set of "bosses,” and these are now su pervising the work, Just why this change was made is not known. It Is thought that the Sa vannah firm has been given another Important contract, and It was neces sary to got their men to do this work right away. They, therefore, for some consideration, turned the work over to the Birmingham firm. The change, as far as can be seen, will have no effect as regards the city. The Savannah firm is still responsible for the work, and Capt. J. W. Wilcox, of Macon, is still employed by the city to see that the specifications of the contract are carried out. It is stipulated in the contract that the pavers will have to give bond for the work, guaranteeing the paving for ten years. Mr. Harris and his concern, the Southern Concrete and Construction Co., were pursued by a hoodoo, it seems, since they began their work in Albany. In the first place, the firm had trou ble with the railroads, so it is claimed. Their material was not placed in time. Their concrete mixer and rock crush er went wrong, and held them up sev eral days. Then again, it is claimed, some of the men employed by the concern proved disloyal and gave the company lots of trouble, caused much dissen sion and necessitated slow work. It Is known that there was dissension among the men, but it is a question whether it was the fault of the work ingmen themselves or those above them. Bach has a contrary claim. Then, as luck would have it, the pavers had a rainy season, second to that with which the soldiers met, to battle with in their work. This caused much delay, for every rainy day had to be a holiday with the street pavers. And now that the work has been given to other people, just on the day that these others took charge, the weather became as pretty as anybody could hope for. Up to Saturday, the la3t day that the Savannah people were in charge, it rained and rained, and work had to be done in small patches. Beginning Monday, when the Birmingham people began, the'weather has been pretty, and there has not been the ieast touch of inclement or disagreeable weather since. Verily, there has been a hoodoo. ANOTHER WONDER* OF SCIENCE, Biology has Proved that Dandruff Is Caused by a Germ, Science is donlg wonders theso days in medicine as wolf as In mechanics. Slnoe Adam lived, the human race has been troubled with dandruff, for whloh no hair preparation has heretofore proved a suc cessful cure until Newbro’s Herplcldo was put on the market. It Is a scientific prep aration that kills the germ that makes dandruff or scurf by digging Into the scalp to get at the root of the hair, whore it daps the vitality; causing itching scalp, falling hair, and Anally baldness, with out dandruff hair must grow luxuriantly. It Is the only destroyer of dandruff. Sold by loading druggists. Send 10c. in stamps for sample to The Horpl- ctde Co.. Detroit. Mich. Albany Drug Oo., Special A vents ADVERTISED LETTER LIST. Highly Illustrious Grand Hianka- dink.—Hercules. , All old-time Cough Syrups bind the bowels. This is wrong. A new idea was advanced two years ago in Ken nedy’s Laxative Honey and Tar. This remedy acts on the mucous mem branes of the throat and Jungs and loosens the bowels at the same time. It expels all cold from the system. It clears the throat, strengthens the mu cous membranes, relieves coughs, colds, croup, whooping cough, etc. Sold ' by Albany Drug Co., Hilsman- Sale Drug Co. People the world over were horrified on learning of the burning of a Chica go theatre in which nearly six hundred people lost their lives, yet more than five times this number, or over 3.000 neonle. died from pneumonia in Chi cago during the same year, with scarcely a passing notice. Every one of these cases of pneumonia resulted from a cold and could have been pre vented by the timely use of Chamber lain’s. Cough Remedy. A great many who had every reason to fear pneu monia have warded It off by the prompt use of this remedy. The fol lowing is an instance of this Bort: “Too much cannot be said in favor of Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy, and es pecially for colds and Influenza. I know that it cured my daughter, Lau ra, of a severe cold, and I believe saved her life when she was threaten ed with pneumonia.”. W. D. Wilcox, Logan, New York. Sold by Htlsman- Sale Drug Co.
