CORN PLANTING TIME.
When Is the best time to plant
corn ?
Farmers have hud different opinions
about this "since the memory of man
runneth not to the contrary," and It
Is not the purpose of this article to
take sides with those who still plant
corn during the dark nights In Feb
ruary, because their daddies did, and
those who wait until after the cold
snap that usually comes with the full
moon In March.
But why, to use an old slang phrase,
put nil your eggs Into one basket
when It comes to planting corn?
It must bo agreed by all that much
depends upon the season, down hero
in Southwest Georgia — and every
where elBe, as for that matter — for
making a corn crop, and we all know
how disastrous a mid summer drouth
Is on corn that hns been planted in
the early spring. With an average
season, corn that is planted any time
between the 15th of February and the
1st of April will show up about alike
In the yield, hut our seasons hare be
come so variable that the farmer who
plants Ids entire crop nt one timo
runs a great rlslp
Then why not distribute the corn
planting season over a period of four
months—from Februnry to .Tune, say—
nnd thus have some early corn and
some late corn, taking advantage of
all the chances of having n favorable
season for somo of it?
A few years ago we know a Dough
erty county farmer who planted twen
ty ncros In corn during the first week
In July, nnd on that twenty acres he
gathered more corn than ho did from
n fifty-acre field that was planted In
the enrly spring. That which was
planted early was caught by n pro
tracted drouth just nt the time when
It most noeded rain to bring it to ma
turity. while that which was planted
In July had n good season.
Wo linvo nlso seen a good corn crop
mndo on land from which a crop of
ontB wns cut in the lntter part of Mny.
It may not always be desirable or ad
visable to follow oats with corn, thus
making two g-nln crops on the same
land, but when no other good land Is
available that from v hlch oats hns
been cut In May enn bo utilized, and
It has been demonstrated time nnd
again I lint the corn planting season
can be extended into the month of
July here In southwest Georgia.

REPORT OF THE CONDITION
OP THE

Had fire broken out in the hold of
the transport Meade after she had
been several days at sea, instead of
as she was just on the eve of sailing,
a tragedy which would hnve shocked
the world might hnve resulted, as the
blaze was one to master which re
quired the most zealous and persistent
efforts of well-equipped fire-fighters,
it is something of a coincidence that
the German ship Silvia struck a mine
lust as she was leaving Vladivostok
with home-bound Russian soldiers on
Tuesday, while the Monde was put out
of commission by fire just ns she was
about to sail from San Francisco with
American troops bound for the Phil
ippines.
Un in Macon the sportsmen hnve
banded themselves together for the
purpose of protecting their bird dogs
from sneak thieves. It is stated that
hundreds of valuable pointers and set
ters have been stolen during the last
few months, and the existence of an
organized band of thieves is suspect
ed. The protective association will
offer a reward for every dog stolen
from a member, and will diligently
nrosecute the guilty parties should the
identity of the latter be discovered.
It is "costing some" to pull off the
Greene-Gaynor trial at Savannah, as
is proved by the statement of the Sa
vannah News, made after careful in
quiry. that the expense to the govern
ment piles up at the rate of $2 a min
ute during the time the court is actu
ally in session.
Colonel Estill has begun campaign
ing "next to the ground.” He is meet
ing “the boys,” shaking their hands
and looking into thlir eyes through
those clear spectacles he wears. And
he is. if reports are to be credited,
winning votes rapidly.
It is reported that Admiral.Togo is
to visit America. We hope the news
is true. The gallant old Oriental war
rior would receive a welcome in this
calculated to make his head
country
swim.
