Mother Bird’s Stratagem. # From Forest and Stream. While strolling on the banks of French creek, near Clayton, in com pany with my wife and a friend, we started a woodcock, which feigned be ing wounded and gave utterance to the most plaintive squeaks, from which we inferred the nest must be near. A short search discovered it among small bushes on the ground In a com paratively exposed position. The nest contained three eggs, which we, of cdurse, did not disturb. Leaving the nest for over an hour, I cautiously re turned, and getting on my hands and knees crept within ten feet of it with out disturbing the old bird. After watching her for about ten minutes I saw her stand up in the nest and with her bill and one foot change the posi tion of two of the eggs, after which she settled back on the nest. She then evidently saw me, for she gave a sudden twist sideways with her head and then slowly and cau tiously stretched out as flat as possi ble, her bill resting flat on the ground. She remained thus for fully five min utes. Presently I arose from my po sition and stepped forward, when the bird quietly sneaked away from the nest, seeming to crouch as near the ground as possible, until about twenty feet away, when she arose with the usual cry, but immediately fell to the ground, fluttered up and down and finally turned over on her hack, but as I approached she scrambled away, dragging one wing on the ground until she had led me fully two hundred yards from the nest, when suddenly she bade me au revoir, and darted away like a rocket. Secreting myself some distance from the nest, in fourteen minutes I was surprised to see her sitting on it as before being disturbed, but how she reached there I am unable to say, as I did not see her approach and half a minute before her appearance on th6 nest nothing was to be seen or heard. As the woods were open I had an ex cellent opportunity of watching her in teresting maneuvers and had hoped 16 be able to note the manner In which .the return would be made. MU V ■ J J?) Tom (after the call)—In heaven’s' name, why did you ask her to sing? Dick—If I hadn’t she would have recited “Curfew Shall Not Ring To night.” The New Cough Syrup—the one that acts as a mild cathartic on the bowels —is Kennedy’s Laxative Honey and Tar. It expels all cold from the sys tem, cuts the phlegm out of the throat, strengthens the mucous membranes of the bronchial tubes, and relieves croup, whooping cough, etc. Children love it. On July 15, 1875, the Rip was caught In a squall. Marr sat astride of the gaff when a great wave broke over the boat and brought down the mainmast. There was ouly one chauce to save the Rip. That was to cut away the litter. But Marr clung to the broken spar, unu to cut away meant to send him over board to death. So, looking at him doubtfully, the nun .hesitated, their axes in their hands. Marr, helpless, pondered. He saw that Ids denlh would be the boat’s salvation, and he shouted: “Cut away, mates! Good by!” Then he let himself tall into the cold, wild sea. Afraid of Strong Medicines.
