A Strong Play is “The Eternal City.”
The Mobile Daily Item of Friday
brings us the following:
“The Eternal City,” a dramatization
of Hall Caine’s novel of that title, 'was
presented last night at the Mobile
theatre, with Miss Jane ICennark in
the leading role, “Donna Roma Vol-
onna.” The drama is well staged and
replete with strong situations that
were so effectively presented as to
hold the attention of the audience
throughout. Miss Kennark was th6
centre of interest around whom tho
climaxes were drawn. A woman of at
tractive personality, she proved her
self a capable actress endowed with
that dramatic force so necessary to th e
successful emotional acrtefes, and
which she developed with such marked
intensity and trueness as to win warm
approval. The drama is one which ap-
! peals to the imagination to a high de
gree and the story with its tragedies,
j and their possible results, keeps this
imagination well wrought up. With
this interest at its fullest pitch, the
final curtain goes down on a scene
which leaves a pleasant impression,
and the auditor leaves the theatre feel
ing that he has heard the story of one
woman’s love, brought, to a happy cul
mination after many trials and much
suffering, not soon to be forgotten.
Next to Miss Kennark, the second
place must be given to Mr. W. V.
Ranous, in the character of “The
Pope.” Simple in manner, of kindly
mien and manner, with much strength
of character in reserve, “The Pope,”
as presented by Mr. Ranous, was an
excellent piece of acting. With a num
ber of good actors in the cast, together
with scenic effects and at times bril
liant costumes worn during the play,
the whole performance proved to be
successful.
