The Herald of October 12 last had
the following concerning the previous
evening’s production of "The Eternal
City,” which will appear again at the I
Rawlins theatre this evening, being
presented by tho, same strong com
pany.
The Herald said:
Had the, stage afforded space and
facilities for utilizing all tho special
scenery carried for the production,
Hall Caine's great play, “The Eternal
City,” as presented at the Rawlins
theatre last niclit. would have wanted
nothing to render It faultless.
It is well that entertainments of
this character come our way now and
then. As a telief from tho monotony
of comic operas, farces, satires and
the like, they are invaluable for the
preservation of our taste for some
thing above the purely frivolous. The
production last ntirht richly deserved
a packed house.' Although a large au
dience was present. In spite of tile un
favorable weather, those seals re
maining vacant should have been oc
cupied.
After seeing “The Eternal City,”
one is impressed with the fact that
an evening has not been wasted. The
play deals with Important personages,
and impressive events. It Is full of
action, and, everything said and done
leads to a definite goal. No small talk
obtrudes. Sphere Is plenty to keep an
audledce Intensely Interested for three,
| hours and tenj minutes without any
“space fillers.”
The theme of the book is welt 1
known. The play differs only In that
“Donna Roma," who, In the book, Is
bad. In the play Is pure and lovable, j
Jape Kennark, who Was “Donna
Roma” last night, has had leading
parts In some of the most successful
productions of recent years. She Is
admirably fitted for the oharacter Bhe
essays in Hall Caine’s play, and no
flaws can he pipked In her work, Into
wlileh she throws her whole energy.
She was repeatedly recalled after the
fall of the curtain last night.
Wm. E. Bonney has the leading
male part In the play. As “David
Rossi,” a member of the Italian house
