The closing was steady at a net de cline of 5 points from yesterday’s. The cloth market In Manchester was Arm, while yarns move more slowly. Some little evidence was present dur ing the early morning trading of the local market, that plrces would work higher, but on every such advance room traders sold, which caused freBh liquidation on a somewhat larger scale of long cotton. Galveston's heaviest receipts for the day, together with the heavy movement reported from Texas, likewise had their depressing Influence upon an easle,r inclined mar ket. On the advnnec early this morn ing a good Inquiry was reported from the east, In the finished goods market, but buyei’s soon became cautious when the raw material situation showed such a Btrong tendency to work lower. While the total movement to date is behind that of the past four seasons, today’s receipts show no sings of di minishing. In fact, this state of af fairs seems to he lending much weight to those who have argued that the amount of cotton held In the Interior Is much greater than Is generally sup posed. Whatever the truth may be, the present market shows materially the effect of existing conditions and ns long as the temper of the trade generally shows such decided antag onism to higher prices, commitments of long cotton should be made only with a view of realizing profits on re- iicttcjns such as are logically due to occur from time to time.
