While sales were some 10,000 hales at a healthy increase In prices, cables were of the opinion that spinners would buy more freely at present levels and larger sales are consequently looked for In the near fu ture. In the local market futures opened a little higher, reflecting the bettered trend of the trade as express ed In cables. But, lacking the looked for continuous support of yesterday’s spot situation, tho market showed ev idence of becoming heavy and room traders, taking advantage of condi tions, somewhat depressed prices. Fluctuations, however, were narrow, and interest in affairs of the moment was distinctly on the wane, doubtless emanating from the lethargic state in to which spots have lapsed, after the standard of excellence set by this arm of the trade yesterday. The dearth of today’s news In the raw material market was in a man ner offset by the reported strength from New England in cotton goods, or more especially the print market as denoted by a sale consummated at % of a cent Increase over any previous price. The market’s continued apathy to news items that in normal times would be construed In the light of great, favorable news but shows that outside support for the time being is non-existent and that to be shaken o\it of the well-worn rut into which it has worked itself, interest of a most profound type must arise before any thing like activity is again to be noted. And so it all narrows itself down to the fact that scalping condi tions have and will prevail, and that speculators must be governed ac cordingly, willing to accept moderate profits. GIBERT & CLAY.
