Among the most interesting fea
tures to a traveler in England are her
cathedral towns. About them more
than about any other spot hangs/that
old-world atmosphere which time has
dimmed and mellowed, but has not
changed. These vast monuments,
which the faith of other ages erected,
seem to speak of the historic past
with tongues that arc eloquent though
dumb, and strange old mediaeval’cus
toms which have died out elsewhere
are still preserved amongst the clols-
ters of a cathedral town. They are
imbued with a staid air of respecta-
Dacn il ty and conservatism different from 1
the rest of England and very different
from the bustle and freedom of life
In the New World, and especially to
one who lias been brought up In its
newer traot.s. would the contrast be
tween the two atmospheres appear
very marked.
Realizing the dramatic possibilities
that He in sucli a contrast, W. A. Tre*
mayne and Irving L. Hall, the authors
of “The Triumph of Betty,” the new
play In which Miss Adelaide Thurston
is starring this season, have laid the
scene of their comedy in a cathedral
town, and into the midst of the staid
and ecclesiastical society which holds
its court there, have transplanted an

of the residents are absolutely repug
nant. She Is thorougUy natural and
used to a life of freedegn, and Is for
ever coming in sharp contact with the
laws of conservative etiquette’ which
govern those with whom she Is
associating.
It can easily be seen what a fine
chance this gives for genuine, com
edy, and also for an underlying note
of pathos In the misunderstandings
and misconstructions to which a free
and generous nature Is exposed. The
plot of the play Is a most Interesting
one, dealing with the family of Can
non Bartlett,* who ts uncle to Betty,
the American girl, and It shows how
she proves herself a true friend to
her English cousins and frustrates the
designs of a false friend of the fam
ily, and in the dnd triumphs over all
her trials and difficulties. The char
acter is one which suits Miss Thurs
ton like the proverbial glove, and the
quaint character sketches in which
the play abounds make it original and
.captivating.
Certainly no 'attraction lias come
this season with more flattering rec
ommendations, thjin .does ‘‘The Tri
umph of Betty.” The praise of admir
ing critics can he best believed by
those who have made Miss Thurs
ton’s acquaintance in other seasons
In "Sweet Clover,” “At Cozy Corners”
and “Polly Primrose.” According to
all accounts Miss Thurston’s company
is tho best that has ever supported the
little actress, and the production will
be complete in every detail.

'“How did he make it?” was asked

Colby, who for flfty-two years was a
clerk In tho city clerk's office, but
who, it was found after his death last
October, had accumulated an estate
that has been appraised at $192,000.
Colby died a bachelor, 75 years old.
He owned no real estate. All of his
fortune consisted of cash, bank de
posits and gilt-edge securities. Ho
inherited nothing. In his room was
found $48,3G7 In neatly folded bills,-
besides securities. At tho New Eng
land Trust Company ho had $S7,000
on deposit.
His will wnB made in 1800, and loft
everything, oxcept a bequest to his
mother, who died before ho did, to
nubllc-instltutlons. His brother, Hen-
S. Colby, an octoeenarlnn, and ills
nieces, Anna E. Lincoln and Emma J.
Taft, of Walthnm, are the contestants.
For thirty years beforo ills death
Clay roomed in the home of Dr. Wil
liam B. Mnckie, of 075 Tremont
street. Dr. Mnckie said he know littlo
of Colby’s affairs, as Colby lived by
himself, was very, reticent, and had
no callers. Dr. William C. Mnolite, of
Brookline, son of Colby’s landlord, and
who was appointed special adminis
trator of ills estate, testified in an
swer to Judge Holmes' question as to
how Colby accumulated such a sum
that Colby was conservative, frugal
and ‘thrifty. Although Colby lived
well and dressed well, the people In
the same house never knew whether
he was rich or poor.

I It has been’ quite a while since the
last -rpmor of a new building. The
last rumors didn't pan out well, as
they were to the effect that at the

Startling But True.
I People the world over were horrified
on learning of the burning of a Chica
go theatre in which nearly six hundred
people lost their lives, yet more than
five times this number) or over 3,000
'people, died from pneumonia in Chi

of these cases of pneumonia resulted
