But the process of rea soning Is unsatisfactory, for, after all, It Is the liberality of the spinner that will Inspire higher prices through an improvement In the spot situation and It seems hardly probable that a man so vitally interested In his own affairs should turn the tide against himself except through dire necessity. NEW ORLEANS COTTON LETTER (By Wire tn Clark & Co.) New Orlenns, Feb. 12.—The report ed covering by Alexandrian Interests In the Liverpool market was respon sible for the better prices ruling on the opening. The day’s session was remarkably dull, In a measure due to the closing of New York and the lack of Interest generally fn evidence. On the close, options showed a gain of one point over yesterday, while the spot market reported prices steady and sales of 10,000 bales at an advance of five points. There was no news of note recorded during the day, lo cally, and the market consequently re mained uninteresting In the extreme. Buyers and sellers Btlll differ so radi cally In their views ns to a mean trading basis, that it seems improba ble that any large sales of spot cotton can bo consummated, while prices re main around the present levels. And yet, on the other hand, It Is claimed by not a few that, should any decided ad vance become apparent, even the rath er limited business now being done would be abruptly checkod, If for no other reason that by the factor placing a prohibitory value upon his. holdings. The fallacy of this latter statement could be easily proved were It at all certain that tho mill man has com mitted himself by future contracts in excess of Ills present holdings, but so much uncertainty exists, and so many conflicting reports are In circulation as to the real position of the fabvlc market, that It hardly seems possible for the knot to bo unraveled except through thp running course of time. We know, or rather, we are told, that tile prices ruling In some departments of tho finished goods market show, not only a steady one, hut likewise a ten dency to advance, which being so, the question arises would the spinner, (wo assuming, of course, that an advance Is under way) still remain In the mar ket knowing that Ills purchases could not hut profit him considerably owing to the afore-noted excellent working basis lie would still have to operate upon? These are merely observations, but ones that are agitating the trade Furnished for Dally Herald Readers by Clark & Co. Liverpool came about as due, 5 up on spots and 3 on futures. Sales 10,- 000 hales. New York and Chicago closed on account of Lincoln’s birthday. It is said the New York underwriting syndicate with which Harvie Jordan Is dickering demands a reduction in acreage. Tills kills the scheme. New Orlenns ruled dull all day The trade generaly is In a waiting mood. New Orleans reported a fair Inquiry for spots. "Longs'’ are shifting their deals to October, as that option Is so much lower than May. If anything should happen to the growing crop, October would soon sell ahead of July. Liverpool closed quiet and steady, 1 up for the day. An assortment of Valentines just received. Beaman’s Music House. Everybody works Hercules. Local Weather Observations.
