L,. GEIGER, 71 Broad Street. POSTOFFICE H VERY BUSY DAY. St. Valentine's Day Caused a Great Deal of Extra Mall Matter. Most of the workera In tho Albany postofflee had their tongues hanging out yesterday afternpon when the big clock In the court-house dome struck the "knocklng-off" time. It had been one of the biggest days the office had ever had, from the standpoint of the amount of mall handled. When a Herald reporter walked up to one of the windows yesterday after noon and asked one of the distributing clerks If they had had a busy day, tho reporter had to dodge an Ink-well that was sent flying at his head. Had the postofflee people had a busy day? Well, they should smile, but they didn’t feel like It about that time iu the afternoon. Anyway, the Herald man learned be fore I10 left that yesterday was the biggest St. Valentine’s Day In tho his tory of the local office. There were stacks and stacks of mall, mostly val entines. ft began to pour In and poui- out yesterday afternoon, and It con tinued In an uninterrupted stream of great volume all day. The carriers went away loaded on the first morn ing delivery. They were nearly as heavily weighted down on the after noon delivery. Everybody, It seemed, had remembered everybody else, and the remembrances had taken shapes that were stamped and had to be de livered by Ttlncle Sam. Never before was there such a stream of valentines to pour through the Albany postofflee. As a result, there were many delighted and many downcast hearts In the city last night. "One thing I noticed this year,” said one of the postofflee clerks, “there were not nearly so many comic valen tines sent as usual. I was really sur prised to note that there had been a considerable decrease in the number of comic valentines and such a large In crease In the number of more pleasing tokens of the day of love. I suppose the people must be getting better-na- tured. The ‘mean dispositions’ fire-dis appearing, and the desire to send cuts and pangs on the wings of the comic valentine has given place to the more commendable wish of conveying in dainty missive the sweet assurance of loving ■ thoughts from ■ an unknown friend." .
