The agony will bo over tit the White uiyit^duse tomorrow, and while a few . . thousand Individuals will ho green i .with envy .that thoy wore not num bered among the wedding guo.'ts, rail- lioas who rend the dally papers will yilgli with joyous relief that It Is all o,-r. ^ 'Investigation bus disclosed the fact that the people of Pittsburg eat fish that have been til cold storage any where from twolve months to four | years. Doubtless tho Ptttsburgers hold the opinion that Hah that have been - In cold Btorage four years are just us 'dead as they ever will be. thinks the ■ Knrannnh News. * The sporting pages of the nows- pera are beginning to tune up tor i coming baseball season, and there ho end of “dope" for tho eiitliusl- •,/.i<stic fan. The latter Indtrldunl Is u i distinctively American, and could .1ve In no other country on the ■“i. Just now he Is In tho same pf fidget which possesses the ill boy on the day before the clr- THE ETHICS OF POKER. In a rural Bouth Georgia settlement not many miles from the Florida line a certain farmer who had been grati fying 1o the limit of the leugtb of his purse a suddenly developed passion for the great American game of poker recently "squealed” on a number of kindred spirits who had for some time been aharlng his enjoyment, but not his bard luck. It is stated that after losing what ready cash he had laid away for a rainy day, the luckless rurallst bartered tor various alluring stacks of reds, whites and blues his store of home-made hams, sides and bellies. He Is reported to have "squealed” oaly when a certain neigh bor whose rabbit-foot had proved effi cacious was In the act of loading a collection of the unhappy one's lus cious hams Into a wagon preparatory to carting them away. Devotees of the national game will hold up their hands In horror at this revelation of human depravity. Here, Indeed, Is a violation of the ethlcB of poker almost Incredible. The hero of any circle of poker play ers Is neither the man who wins the tallest stack of chips hor he who rakes In the biggest pot in an evening of play, but the one who loses per sistently without getting "ugly” or even allowing a shade of disappoint ment to pause upon his countenance. And by the same exacting rule, the fellow who "squealB” sinks too low In the scale wherein all sportsmen are weighed to deserve anything but the contempt of graceful losers. The “Bquoaler," once his Identity as such Is established, Is forever barred from participation In sittings at poker. And r even the man who neither, plays nor approves of the game feels at liberty to hold and express a somewhat sim ilar opinion on tho subject. The decision of the Supreme Court 1 Georgia that bucket shops arc legi- e business concerns Is keenly dls- ntlng to those who have been ; a determined fight upon tnsti- j-of this character. The Sa ne Court holds that as the leglsla- j licenses bucket shops they can t lawfully be dealt with under the [ statutes for gaming or deal- Here Is a tribute to the great Amer ican hog, paid by the Moro (La.) Ob server: "You will never know the trouble and ploasure of life until you raise hogs. They are a bother and a vexation to the spirit of man while they live, hut bring Joy and content ment to the soul of man when they die at hog-killing time. The American hog, howovor, Is tho dnd-blamedest, split-hoofed, long-snouted busybody unimnl wo ovor saw. He can make a fellow nuuldor than other animals that Infest tho promises. He will nlwuys squeal and muddy your punts when he knows you lire trying to feed him. He will get In your garden through a knot hole und destroy enough produce In throe minutes to foed your wife and children for three months. He will pay no attention to a wide-open gnto whore you want him to go through, hut will shovel out several cubic yards of dirt to make a hole into a place you don’t want him to go. Ho Is the big gest nuisance nnd most profitable on tho fnrm.” Tile BadiloBt feature ol the situation In China Is knowledge of the fact that should an outbreak occur It will prob ably coino so suddenly that lorolgners, especially those In Isolated districts, will be sacrificed to the fury of the Celestluls before aid can reach them. That was the case in tho Boxer out breaks, of blomly memory, and, though tho powers are prepared to act moro promptly now, will doubtless prove the ease again. Nobody will think of Longworth to morrow until he appears before tho clergyman who Is to perform the cere mony. Then he will bo seen, for the simple reason that he will be standing at .the sldo of the bride, upon whom every pair of eyes will he turned. Glooms are small parts of weddings, anyhow, und owing to circumstances for which ho Is In no wise to blame, this happens to be particularly true of Longworth. The prisoner who, when being sen tenced In the Superior Court at Sa vannah to ten years' imprisonment, expressed the hope that he would meet Judge Cann and the Jurymen who bad officiated at his trial In hell, hud rather extreme views. In fact,- he was away off, for everybody knows that In Sa vannah all the folks belong to the church and walk the straight and nar row path.
