Tillman’s Little Joke.
The frisky Senator Tillman saved
the dignity of the ponderous Senator
Clapp recently. In order that Mr. Till
man might have a committee room
the Senate recently gave him the
chairmanship of the Five Civilized
Tribes, one of the harmless commit
tees which exist simply for the pur
pose of giving Senators office rooms
to transact their business in. Mr. Till
man had been too busy with other
things to note the humorous possibili
ties of the situation until the other
day. Having nothing to do. he looked
up the records of the hills, discovered
a little two-by-four hill relating to the
Five Civilized TrlbeB, which, accord
ing to the usual custom, had been re
ferred to the Committee on Indian Af
fairs. ,
Mr. Tillman arose and moved that
this bill be referred to his own highly
Important committee, pointing out that
It was a grave invasion of that com
mittee’s rights.to give the bill to an.
other. Someone conveyed the news to
the serious Mr. Clapp, chairman of In
dian affairs. He rushed breathlessly
Into the Senate chamber and to the
rescue of his committee. Tillman per
sisted; Clapp became warm; and at
last Tillman yielded with great show
of reluctance. He said gravely that
his dignity as chairman of the Flye
Civilized Tribes was dear to him, hut
equally dear was Mr. Clapp's dignity,
and rather than Infringe It he would
permit .the bill to remain In the compe
tent custody of Clapp.
Mr. Clapp retired, drawing long
breaths of relief. A twinkle Irradiated
the lone eye of the bad boy of the
Senate, and the grent debate was over.
Slightly cooler today, hut still not
cold enough to he disagreeable. When
the reports of such weather as fs be
ing experienced in the North reach
us who are down here basking In tlm
glorious sunshine. It makes us glad
we are living in God’s country.

Startling But True.
People the world over were horrified
on learning of the burning of a Chica
go theatre in which nearly six hundred
people lost their lives, yet more than
flve w times this number, or over 3,000
people, died from pneumonia In Chi
cago during the same year, with
scarcely a parsing notice. Every one
of these cases of pneumonia resulted
from a cold and could have been pre
vented by the timely use of Chamber
lain’s Cdugh Remedy. A great many
who had every reason to fear pneu
monia have warded it off by the
prompt use of this remedy. The fal
lowing .is an' instance of this sort:
“Too much cannot be said in favor of
Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy, and es

know that it cured my daughter, Lau

saved her life when she was threaten
