Greeks arrested for alleged illegal reg
istration Is John Drouspholous, who
keeps, a fruit stand on Bull street.
John came into prominence In Savin-
nah Inst year when he was tried for
fselllng cigarettes to minors. The trial
took place In the Superior Court.
Judge Cnnn asked him to prove his
character. Then the Greek sprung a
Surprise. He took from his'pocket a
package’ containing a Greek cross of
honor. The court's eyes opened whon
he saw It.
“That," said John, “was given me
by the King of Greece for bravery In
buttle with the Turks;"
The court’s eyes grew larger. Then
John took from another case a medal.

Tuskegee, Ala.. Feb. 21.—The fif
teenth annual Tuskegee Negro'Con
ference Is being held here today,
Booker T. Washington presiding.
Representatives are present from
thirty states and the District of Col
umbia.
Washington urged the principles of
industrial education for negroes, and
urged that they become owners in
stead of renters of land.

PROMINENT ATLANTAN
IS NEAR DEATH’S DOOR.

Atlanta, Ga.. Feb. 21.—Howell Cobb
Jackson, one of the most prominent
citizens of Atlanta, is in a critical con
dition in a private sanitarium, having
suffered a stroke of paralysis in his
right side. On Monday he celebrated
at his home on Peachtree street the
fifty-seventh anniversary of his
day. For hours ’ after suffering the
stroke he was unable to speak. He
liad been in ill health for some time,
aud the attack was not wholly unex
pected by his family, Mrs. Jackson,
his wife, and Renfroe Jackson, his son,
and young Mrs. Jackson, his daughter-
in-law. are at his bedside.

ba-nv Guards was held last night at
the Auditorium, the new armory of the
company, both the state and United
States inspectors being present,

been reorganized only a few months.
Capt. Paul J. Brown and First and
Second Lieutenants Tompkins and
Freeman have been working faithfully
l’or the last few weeks, and it was
largely due to their efforts that the
company passdd the inspection last
night, without tile least trouble.
The members o! the company have
taken unusual Interest hi military mat
ters of late. There is a. great deal of
company pride, and much emulation
and competition between the men. As
a result, the company is teaching a
high grade of ofliciency.
