A nows Item In our local columns a few days ago briefly reported a card purty given tiy one of the popular ma trons of the city, and one feature of the report suggested this editorial ar ticle. Tho lady giving this card party made a departure from what has been the custom here since card parties have been se much In vogue which we would be glad to see adopted by oth ers. Instead bf awarding prizes to those making the highest and nekt highest scoreB In the games, she gave a souveqir to each lady In attend ance. "All coons took alike" to n Yankee FUlbpsterer Joe Hill Hnll has do- ared for. Dr. Nunnnlly for governor. be Athens Banner Is "whooping up” for Big Farmer Jim Smith for Irst we send missionaries to save heathen, and then we seijd war- i to save the mlssiouarles. hen It comes to giving tho negro ;en a warm time, we commend > to the consideration of all her >r states, North and South. • The peach crop seems to have es caped destruction by a narrow mar- r gln, but a miss Is r.s good as a mile, and Elbertas that have escaped by the skin of their teeth will be just as full of toothsome delights as those which danger nevyr threatened. And we are assured, and can readily believe, that this waB one of the most pleasant and altogether successful curd parties given In Albany during the present season. The Herald does not wish to he un derstood us railing at card parties, nor oven aB criticising those ladles who award prizes, but we merely dq- sire to embrace this opportunity to suggest that by eliminating the one feature—playlnff for prizes—to which so many good people object, much of the criticism which Is now urged ngnlnst such society functions by well- moaning persons would be silenced. While It Is not so Intended or con sidered by the ladies, It must be ad mitted that the prize feature In card games borders closely onto gambling. At lenst one superior court Judge of the stnto has denounced It as gamb ling and charged the grand jury that it was the duty of that body to return Indictments against those who partici pated In such games. This Is, In our opinion, a rather rigid construction of tlie law against gambling, but, at the same time, we ask the ladles In all kindness and enndor It It would not be best for society thnt the prize feature be cut out of tho card pnrtles entirely. Thnt a successful and most enjoy able card party-can be given without the prize fenturo has been demon strated by 'one of the most tactful and popular hostesses of the city. Will not others—all others In Albany—fol low this moBt pleasing and praise-, worthy example? Exports of various degrees of re pute are boginning to make estimates on tho cotton crop of 190G, and about its small an Increase ns any have thus fnr predicted Is 6 per cent. The farm ers of the South must decide for them selves whether they will ruin or Im prove their condition this year. Ex perience has abundantly proved that small cotton crops are worth more money to the producers than those of the bumper variety, and If the plant ers this year overload their fields, It may with all confidence be promised them thnt thoy will pay tho penalty. Flannel-mouthed Senator Foraker and Representative Kelfcr, of Ohio, both of whom never lose v a chance to wave the bloody shirt or to strike for negro rights In the South, should now turn their attention to tho situation at Springlleld, ln*thelr own state, where incendiary mobs have been firing the houses of negroes, forcing the occu* pants to' fleo for their lives. A popu- lur'-mpvemcut appears to have been set on foot to run all the negroes out of Sprlngfleltl because two negroes as saulted a white man. Just why a morder trial til New York should attract more attention and claim more space In the columns of the newspapers of the country than the trial In another place of another case with features equally sensational or interesting, Is one of the things not easily to be accounted for. The failure of the Southern Bank and Trust Company, at Fort Smith, Ark., reveals the Interesting fact that that Institution lmd been operating for about a year without capital. Its lonnB were made from Its deposits. The officials bf the Fort Smith bank have evidently been studying the methods of Wall street geniuses. They never gripe or sicken, hut cleanse nnd strengthen the stomach, liver and bowels. This Is the univer sal verdict of the many thousands whp use DeWltt’s Little Early Risers.
