CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT -
POLITICS. .
The DemQcrutlc Executive Commit
tee .tof the Scclind Congressional Dis
trict has been called to meet in Ah
bany on the 16th Inst, for the purpose
of electing a chairman to fill the va-
cancy caused by the death of Capt.
R. Hobbs, of this city, and to order a
primary for the nomination of a con
gressman.
The calling together of the district
executive committee will naturally
stir up the politicians and develop any
Indications that may bo In reserve as
to whether there Is to be a contest In
the district this year or not.
When the committee meets, Its first
duty will be to elect a chairman. This
honor will, In alt probability, go with
out contest to Judgo Frank Park, of
Worth county, who presided over the
last district convention. Judgo Park
is eminently qualified to discharge the
duties of the position and Is a loyal
Democrat without nny frills or furbe
lows who can alwu"ys be depended up
on to exercise firmness In standing for
party principles in time of emergency.
If anybody In the district proposes
to contest with Judge Grlgg’s, our pres
ent very ablo and efficient representa
tive, for his seat In CougreBs, It has
been kept very qulot. up to the pres
ent time. Certain It Is that nobody
Who talks politics with The Herald or
who over makes a confidant of this
paper In matters of this sort hns nny
Intention of entering the race against
Judgo Griggs. There mny be — there
doubtless urc—gentlemen in the dis
trict who would like to go to Congress,
but they nil know that they would
have a Imrd road to travel to gel
there In a rnce against Jim Griggs,
Still, tho field Is nn open one, und The
Herald does not wish to be under,
stood as purposely discouraging any
one who mny have a laudable political
ambition to gratify.
Whether ho shall havo opposition or
not; Judgo Griggs will, In view of tho
extraordinary campaign which Is now
on over the governorship, ask the ex,
ecutlve committee to separate the
congressional primary from tho gen
eral state primary. It Is obvious why
lie or anybody else making tho race
for Congress would not want to get
mixed up In the gubernatorial race.
Judge-Griggs, just us any other candi
date for Congress would have, hns
friends favoring perhaps every one of
the six gubernatorial candidates, and
embarrassments would he almost sure
to arise If the congressional nomina
tion should he nmdo In the same pri
mary with the gubernatorial nomina
tion.

A Texas editor of a religious pqper

Scott! It so happens that this pious
editor has been discussing politics and

paper of late, and. when this is known.
It can be easily imagined how tho
Houston Post handled him.

Hon. James M. Griggs, our immedi
ate representative In Congress, will no
doubt be elected chairman of the Dem
ocratic Congressional Committee at
the meeting of the Democratic mem
bers of Congress to be held on next
Tuesday night. Representative flood,
of Virginia, the only other congress
man who has been considered as be
ing In the race for the chairmanship,
announced yesterday that he had with
drawn In Judge Griggs’s favor. Judge
Griggs was chairman of the committee
four years ago, and Ills work In the
campaign of that year, demonstrated
the fact that he was a very active
and forceful campaigner.
John R. Walsh, president of the de
funct Chicago National Bank, seems
to be in for a lively round with the
federal authorities, it begins to ap
pear that Walsh, In swearing to vari
ous statements of the bank’s condi-
tlon. took undue liberties with the
truth. The loans of the institution
amounted to $3,000,000, but were
sworn to as $215,000. The government
Is often slow to discover crookedness
in national banks, but seldom fails to
punish with a heavy hand, once the
truth Is made known.
