Automobiling certainly, is a great sport when the automobile is feeling good, but when it balks, and just re- fuses to move, and all the persuasion, inward and outward cursing, skill and force, won't make’ the old thing be good, there is a different tale to tell. Mr. Leroy Brown can tell the differ ent tale, all right, if he only will. Mr. Brown is an expert automobilist. He decided he would show one of his lady friends, last .Sunday afternoon, just how much he knew about automobil- iiig, and after much persuasion the lady summoned up enough courage to ]jrave a trip with him. The machine too-tooed and chewqd the rag % little- in front of the lady’s stopping-place, and glided off. Across the river the happy couple fled. "Honk! bonk!” the “footer” said, and Mr. Brown was in a second heaven of pardonable delight. The machine glided along'with the speed and ease of the rapidly moving clouds, and a quickly disappearing trail of dust In the rear told the story of their going. On and on i they went, to Blue Spring, and then past it., ,Mr. Brown began to expound the admirable qualities of the machine, its many in tricacies and complications, and how successfully he had learned and mas tered them, and the machine rolled- on, proof positive pgd prlma facie evi dence to the truthfulness of hie words. Four miles they went, and not a hitch or a halt. Alas, it is indeed a Bad tale to tell! Just as the happy couple in their automobile reached the five-mile post, there was a snap and the machine came to a standstill. This did not feaze Mr. Brown, (le was made of sterner stuff. Off came his coat, and up went his sleeves. To Work 1 ,tie went; with a ri^t'-^ood yill. r He'itried .tbts 'dnd ,that, and. the machine still stood as-silent, and im movable as the sphinx or the Rook of Gibraltar. He scraped up the ground under the machine, ate dirt, smelt gasolene, and breathed a com bination of dust and gasolene, in bis desperate attempts to right matters. But never a sound or a move from that machine. In tbe meantime, relentlessly and ceaselessly, time. ..rolled on. The sun was sinking beyond the horizon, and a mantle of darkness was fast envel oping the eartK^Not a vehicle passed that- could take the machine in tow or carry the couple back to “Home, Sweet Home.” There was nothing to say that could be said in the presence of a lady. There was nothing to do but to "foot it” home. It was a long walk, a most miser able tramp, but it just had to be “did," and “did” it was. His friends said yesterday that they couldn't understand why Mr. Brown looked so tired and worn out, and why his usual good nature and even temper were so ruffled. Like gTape- nuts, though, "there’s a reason,” as anyone who reads the above will see. How They Mny Be Successfully Culti vated la -Tabs, 1 / - V The cultivation of aquatic plants In htliR makes It possible for any one to try Uls skill with them. Of course lie uefcd not expect to be able to grow tho, rarer sorts of uyinpbaea, but he can succeed with tuauy beautiful varieties of water Illy and other plants of that class. A half barrel is not very at tractive In Itself, hilt Its lack of beauty may be coucealed by the plants, or it may be sunk Its depth In tile earth. When it contains a flue specimen of some aquatic plunt we will forget till about Its luck or grace. When prepar ing for those plants put in rich black mud from tile bed of streomB or muclc from swamps to tbe depth of a foot; then plant your roots in it and All with water. Add enough water from time to time to make up for that which is lost by evaporation and give tbe tub a sunny place in the yard or garden. If yon want to grow mope plants than one tub will accommodate, it- is a good, plan to take four, five, six, or ns many as you may decide on, and have them sunk in the ground close together, so that tbe general effect will be some thing like that which a large tank would glyc. A better plan, though a more expensive one to carry out, le to have a tank constructed of heavy planks. These should be eecurcly bolt ed at the ends and the Joints made tight by white lead in the grooves. AQUATIC PLANTS Ironmonger.
