COTTON PICKINGS.
Furnished for Daily Herald Readers
by Clark & Co.
Liverpool advanced 4 points, which
was-a full response to our market of
yesterday. Sales were 12,000.
Sales for the five days of the week
have reached 84,000 baleB in Liver
pool. .
Reports of cuts In certain lines of
dry gods were denied, and the’ market
quoted firm at unchanged prices.
In spite of the comparative high
prices, spinners' takings up to date
show 7,280,000 against 7,060,000 laBt
year, when cotton was very cheap.
The Insight for the week will be
100,000 hales short of last year.
May will prove the critical month
on the next crop, and If It should be
a rainy month, all hope of a large
yield must be abandoned.
Hood, Fernle & Co. cabled: “We
are uncompromisingly bullish on the
general situation. The Manchester
turnover continues the largest and
most profitable ever known. We re
gard 7d as a certainty,”
The American markets opened 3 to
4 lower. There was not the slightest
pressure on the market.
NEW ORLEANS COTTON LETTER.
(Bt Wire to Glark A Oo.l
New Orleans, March 9.—One time
during the session of the forenoon
market It looked as though options
would record a higher range of values
than the two points advance over yes
terday on the close, but cables were
less favorable In tone and seemed to
denote that spinners were temporarily
supplied, sales today being only 12,000
bales In contrast with the large trans.
actions done dally throughout the past
week.
Our own market was even quieter
than on the previous day. In the early
trading, futures were a few points off
on the reported decreasing demand for
spot cotton, while the continued ab
sence of any outside interest in the
market and the bearlshly inclined ele
ment in the ringside likewise exerted
unfavorabel impressions. The spot de
mand seemed to increase as the day
wore on, but either the spot people are
short of the actual stuff, or they still
persist In refusing to meet any de
cline recorded In futures, for certainly
according to the best information the
offerings are dally becoming more un
attractive. With the clearing away of
the Moroccan dispute, which seems
likely to come to- a peaceable consum
mation, one objectionable feature, at
least, so far as the trade is concerned,
will have been done away wtjb, and
the government report on the 20th
Inst, of the total amount of cotton
ginned for the season, silencing once
and for all time any contentions that
may still exist as to the actual size
The census department will issue a
gingers’ report on March 20, showing
amount ginned up to March 16. It is
conceded same will be under 10,400,-
000, and should prove a strong “bull
card."
From every section of the belt come
cries of "scarcity of labor.”
Brown & Hayne appear to be per
fect "fiends” for July cotton.
Cotton spinning has taken on new
life in Russia since the revolution.
This country promises to he a heavy
buyer from this time on.
“I regard present prices as discount
ing a crop of 10,750,000, and believe
every pound of a crop of this size will
be needed to supply rapidly increas
ing consumption."—C. D. Freeman.
Some of the bear messages from
Liverpool were "evidently ordered
from New York.”
Port receipts were 13,000 against
19,000 last year.
Liverpool was steady at the close on
advapce of 2 to 3 points.
