Liverpool felt the effect of selling
orders from New York and opened 3
down. Sales were 14,000 baleB. Spin-
ners’ demand evidently not satisfied.
With the gTeat "American public”
out of the market, the New York man
ipulators appear to be able to hammer
prices at will.
Our markets opened unchanged.
There was a fair amount of buying at
times.
The only bear news was the rather
large estimate for HouBton tomorrow.

NEW YORK COTTON LETTER,
(Bt Wire to Clark &Oo.)
New,York, Match 12.—There Is no
mistaking the pronounced bearish sen-
timent prevalent in the 3outh and Its
effect on the local market. From
many points come reports of easier
spot markets and announcements of
extensive and favorable crop prepara.
tlons.\Certalnly In the latter Instance
everything favors the planting season,
which Is a good cause for optimism
in the Industry Itself, hut hardly suf
ficient to justify extremely low prices
at least until later in the season, when
we shall have observed the after-ef
fects of an abnormal spring.
The South continues to sell October,
and the buyers are our friends who
put the raw cotton into yarnB and
cloth. The strange feature of the
present declining market is the com.
plete reversal of conclusions by the
South, which of course is natural and
consistent as the new crop becomes
more of a market and industrial fac
tor, but the amazing feature is, that
knowing just this situation would de
velop, holders of cotton should have
been deceived by the 16-cent phantom
and in Borne Instances over-stayed a
good market.
C. D. FREEMAN & CO.
It Is now generally believed that
October will sell ahead of July.
The market pursues the even tenor
of Its way without much excitement
There"is no leader on either Bide.
Port receipts were 15,000 against
24,000 last year.
The strong demand for May at 50
kept that position fairly steady.
We cannot expect much advance un
til the general public commences to
buy or the large short interest com
mences to cover.
The market is * altogether profes
sional, and the New Orleans and New
York scalpers are reaping a rich har
vest
