Now that the congressional commit
tee on Rivers and Harbors has come
and gone, has seen Albany, tasted of
her hospitality, and has taken a boat-
rlde on the Flint, much speculation is
1 rife as to what action the committee
j will take In regard to deepening the
| chnnnels. Speculation, of course, Is
I the order ot the day. The commit
] was favorably impressed with the city
Itself, but whether It thought the deep
ening of the channel of the Flint to be
Judicious and will so recommend to
Congress, is altogether a matter of
speculation.

PLANETARY VITALITY.
■•rthqaakea Can Take Place Only a*
Living Globe.. .
A moonquak* Is now unthinkable,
because the moon Is as dead ns a door
nail. , Our satellite la "ever foreshad
owing our own ultimate doom, like the
mummy at Egyptian banqueta,” bnt in
the meantime, If the Edinburgh Review
has correctly conceived the teachings
of seismology, the Inhabitants of earth
may console themselves far the havoc
wrought through earthquakes by re
flecting that they demonstrate the vi
tality of our planet. In that distant
past when the moon actually quaked
there may —some scientists declare
there must-have been forms of anima
tion upon Its surface. "Though the
moon, by Tea son of Its smnller size,
wus bound to lose Its atmosphere, it
must have taken millions of yeanp to
do so, nnd there may have been time
for the cycle of life, from the primeval
germ up to sentient beings and down
again to the hardiest lingering plant
cells, to run Its full circle.” The writer
In the Edinburgh Review continues to
develop his line of thought:
“Earthquakes are a sign of -planetary
vitality. They would seem to be char
acteristic of the terrestrial phase of de
velopment. Effete globes like the moon
can scarcely be subject to the etresB to
which they are due, nor can they be
very suitably constituted for the prop-'
sgatlon of elastic waves. Inchoate
worlds, such as Jupiter and Saturn,
are still less likely to be the scenes of
reverberating concussions. Their ma
terials have not yet acquired the neces
sary cohesion. They are pasty'or fluid,
If not partially vaporous. On the earth
the seismic epoch presumably opened
when, exterior solidification having
commenced, the geological ages began
to run. It will last so long as peaks
crumble and rivers carry Bedlment so
long as the areal distribution of loads
fluctuates and strains evoke forces ade
quate for their catastrophic relief.
“Our globe Is by Its elasticity kept
habltatile. The separation of sen from
dry land Is thus aud not otherwise
maintained. The alternations of eleva
tion and suhsldnneo manifest the con
tinual activity of tblR reserve of en
ergy. The dimensions of the globe we
Inhabit depend upon ihe balance of
pressure aud e::p:ia:-.lveness. Relaxa
tion or enhancement of either Instant
ly occasions a bending inward or an
arching outward of the crust. Just by
these sensitive reactions the planet It
self shows itself to lie alive, and seis
mic thrilllngs are the breaths It
draws."—Current Llternture.

If ever people had cause to be dis
couraged. the men In charge of the
paving operations on Washington
street certnlnly must be numbered
among the first of them. Almost ev
ery conceivable kind of obstacle that
could beset them has done so, and
with a vengeance. Trouble with the
railroads, delays in shipments, and the
like, internal warfare among the au
thorities and the men, constant fights,
misunderstandings about the specifica
tions, arrests, constant rain—all have
contributed to make the lot of the un
fortunate street pavers doubly hnrd.

The Reno & Alvord Surprise Co., a
vaudeville show, was the attraction at
the Rawlins theatre yesterday after
noon and night. Popular prices were
charged, and based on the price qt
admission, the performance was fairly
creditable. Reno's slelght-of-hand and
conjuring work was the feature, but
by cutting out a few acts he could have
made his work much more enjoyable,
as It was entirely too long and monot
onous. Kali, the Juggler, was very
good, as was also Miss Emily Reno,
the slack wire artist. The program
was not carried out in full at the night
performance.

The accommodation and conven
ience which it affords is not the only
thing to be considered. One of the
essentials of a good desk is being rat-
proof—absolute protection of papers
against the inroads of rats. Another
is a dust-proof and perfectly construct
ed apron. If you buy a desk of this
kind you get one that is absolutely
satisfactory, and you don’t regret your
purchase. This is the kind we han
