Furnished for Dally Herald Readers 'by Clark & Co. Tired N shorts covered in Liverpool this morning and^sent the contract market there up 3 to 4 points. Spots were 2 down on 10,090 Bales. Early cables said: "The excitement here is about over. Bulls generally admit there will be no famine of cot ton, and market should work lower unless something happens to growing crop.” Planters appear willing to accept 10 cents for the unsold portion of the crop. From the preparations now being made, It seems that the cry of "no labor” was a little premature. The government’s estimate of 10,- 160,000 will miss the crop quite a mil lion bales. Even Price’s were too low. figures of 10,800,000 There are no aggressive bulls, but the bears appear to be only scalpers. - The coming census report Is re ceiving little or no attention. Our opening was "as soft as the coo of a dove.” Heavy sales .were made in the Au gusta district. CO RN—WH EAT—M EAT. Chicago, Mar. 15.— Opening. Close. Cotton was 3 cents lower tbiS time last year. (By "Wire to Clark & Co.) New Orleans, March 15.—The par tial recovery of the Liverpool* market in the severe drubbing administered yesterday was reassuring to those that held "“ that the action of the foreign market during the previous day’s ses sion was extremely difficult nf explan ation. The trade generally having be come imbued with the idea that Liver pool should continue to report exceed ingly large transactions in Bpot cot ton are inclined to view the sales of 10,000 bales today aB only fair, where as such a daily occurrence is about as much as can be reasonably expected. Our, own market witnessed a bet ter opening on the more favorable news from abroad and shorts found it to their advantage to cover, which, to gether with the limited amount of buy ing caused by the nufavorable weather conditions existing- throughout the belt, lent a decided improvement to the market’s undertone. Despite the unfavorable weather .here today a further increased / activ ity was reported in the’spot situation and large sales only seemed restricted on account of the limited and as a rule undesirable lots displayed. It appears more than probable that there is a relative scarcity of the high er grades and factors who still pos sess such cotton are comparatively in different to any decline that the future positions may exhibit 'The sentimental influence that has been so potent in afflicting prices shows no signs of abatement and ring scalpers take advantage of any good preparation reports to put forth new lines of * short cont *acts and accept moderate profits, allowing the market to work back ‘ on its own i atural strength until a new opportunity pre sents itself for a repetition of similar tactics. The forecasts promise weatter of a mixed character to arrest eflorts to depress'values for the next few days, and it is not concerned that Tuesday’s census report will be entirely to the liking of the bears, hence for the im mediate prices at least remain steady. COSTA ft ®2KO Wft, Proprietors. Gnrrfck nml Dr. Jnlinnon. There is n characteristic glimpse of Garrick in J. T. Smith’s “Book For a Rainy Day:” “On a night “when Mr. Garrick was acting the part of Lear one of the soldiers who stood on the stage blubbered like a child. Mr. Gar rick. vrho was as fond of a compliment as most men, when the play was over sent far the mnn to his room and gave him half a crown. It was the custom formerly for two soldiers to stand on the stage during the time of perform ance. one at either end of the proscen- lujn.” < Of Dr. Samuel Johnson in a state of high indignation Smith offers this pic ture: “I once saw him follow a sturdy thief, who had stolen his handkerchief In Grosvenor square, seize him by th6 collar with both hands and shake him violently, after which he quickly let him loose, and then with his open hand gave him so powerful a smack on the face that sent him off the pavement staggering.” The market was’ easier on selling of October and December by the South.”—Freeman. Port receipts were 14,000 against 21,000 last year. As long as they run within 50 per cent of laBt year the crop is sure to reach 11,000,000. Liverpool experienced “a change of heart” soon after the opening and closed quiet, pnly 2 higher. Albany Decorating Co. f Wall Paper, Burlaps, Room Moulding and Picture Rail Rumney Building. By the following, which is an exact copy of the first paragraph in the will of Henry IV. nf England, written In January, l*i0S, it will be seen that even kings are not always good spellers: “In the name of God, Fadir, Son and Holly Gost, three Persons and one God, 1, Heuery, sinful wr.ecb by the Grace of God Kyng of England and Frounce, and Lord of Irland, being w my hole mynd, mak my testament in manere and forme that anyth, j Fyrst,. I ‘ be- quethe to Almighty God my sinful soul, the wbyche had nevere been worthy of the man, but thro’ bys mercies and bys grnse, which iyffe I bavetli myspendyed thereof I put my self e wholly in his tgrase and merca*e with ail myn berte. ^Iso, 1 thanke’ my lordis threw the peple for the trew servyse that they have dune unto me, and 1 ask them forgyvnis if 1 hastb mysentreted them in euy wyse.” It will also be uoted that Henry, be sides not being up to the standard as a speller, had a peculiar habit of spelling one word in from two to five different ways. Artlsta aa Frame Maker*. The frame for the picture is always a sore question with the average artist, as any one of them will confess, and any frame maker testify to. Most painters have definite ideas on how their canvases should be fnmied, but when it comes to ordering and paying for them, that is another matter. As great an artist as Alma-Tadema al ways designed his own frames, and not a few New York painters design and make their own. There is one Boston artist who began by making his own frames after bis own designs, and bis effects were so artistic that several or his colleagues in that city begged l^m to make frames for them. He consented to do this in a few. cases; until the fame of his work spread abroad, and as a result he received so many orders that he set up a frame making shop of his own. Doctors Are Puzzled.
