A little before 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon one of the big caldrqns pf tar In use by the street paving^ crew caught) fire. There was a hot blase under the pot, and the boiling contents became Ignited. Then there wns “something doing" for the space of about ten minutes. The hurry call was Issued to the paving laborers, and the fire under the caldron was quickly ex tinguished with sand and water. It was a more .serious matter, however, to get the upper hand of the 1 blazing tar, and the Job was accomplished only after a large canvas tarpaulin had been burned and Engineer Wilcox had sacrificed a coat and a pair of shoes. A large crowd of spectators, every one ready with suggestions but all with their hands in their pockets, gathered on the sidewalks to watch the progress ,of the fight. It Is reliably reported that when Chief Tom James, of the fire department, heard of the blaze, and realized that he and his bunch had not been called Into the fray, he threatened to have a city case made against somebody.
