Spot sales still, how. ever, continue to be of good and steady volume, those reported being Of 10,000 bales at one point decline, Cables were inclined to view the mar ket more favorably and expressed the opinion that the bottom had been reached for the time being. All throughout the day there waa quite a noticeable change In sentiment at the ringside, which in the early morning trading caused some short covering. Later on, when It became generally known that ,the erstwhile beaT leader had Issued a bullish circu lar, It appeared ioif a moment as If there wouldn’t be enough cotton to go around, so eagerly was the ringside trying to buy, and the absolute lack of any outside support was never before made so apparent as when price Changes became hardly commensurate with the increase of the more favor, ably Inclined attitude of the scalping element to help prices along. Favorable influences for the time being seem to have taken hold with a firm grasp. Weather conditions for the past week can hardly be called sat isfactory for preparations and when rain has not fallen, temperatures have been almoBt too low to wisely admit the sowing of seed. Another fact Is the decrease of 43,000 bales in the re ceipts at Bombay, which rather fore shadows a bullish weekly supply state ment for today. On the whole, we are rather Inclined to believe that a mod erately higher market will be evi denced when these facts become firm ly established with the speculative public. GIBERT & CLAY. Nothing new is stated, but people must soon realize the dangers of aggressive short sell ing prematurely and after the com plete liquidation of hull accounts, Iii the local market there is a con tinued accumulation of May by people whb have confidence in the prospective value of spot cotton and who are them selves largely committed to spinners’ contracts. Somehow the speculative public which trades in cotton compre hends only the crop condition as a price-making factor. When thky have no crop news to trade on. speculators are often at a loss to know what should guide their operations. Other forces are uncomprehended and ig nored. And so now the animating motive of their trading is good crop preparation as a justification for short sales. It will be many weeks before the crop outlook alone will determine the price, and we caution our friends against extensive sales at 10 cents for the new crop contracts until we shall know something of its cultivation and development. C. D. FREEMAN & CO. ' COTTON PICKINGS. Furnished for Daily Herald Readers by Clark & Co. The market lacks snap. What on earth has become of Mike Thomas? , We opened 2 higher, but immediate ly proceeded to work 2 lower. Liverpool continued “draggy,” quiet, steady and dull, on sales of 10,000. Fu tures were 2 higher, but spots were down 1 point. Brown & Hayne are not bidding for July in thousands these days. Can it be that they have “a sufficiency”? Some bull traders were delayed by an accident on the subway. The bears traveling by automobile, were down ahead of time. • Blizzards continue to rage over the East and Middle West, but in Dixie Land the sun shines on both sides of the fence, and “Cuffy” sings as he scatters ‘‘joauo.” Further reductions in the price of bleached goods and print cloths were reported from Fall River.
