Coniidence In the future Is remarkably bright, and the outlook would be far better than ever before at this season If the uncer tainty should be removed. MereanUle collections are more prompt, except in certain parts of the South, where cot ton is still held for better terms. “Commodity prices are slightly high er, on the whole, and building mater ials continue very strong, structural work being abnormally heavy for the season. Ral'road earnings for March thus far surpass last year’s by 9.1 per cent, and foreign commerce at this port for the last week shows a gain of $2,690,032 In Imports over the same period of 1906, while exports are prac tically unchanged. "One of the best features of the Iron, and steel Industry Is the steady de mand for steel rails. “No decrease Is noted In the activity of textile mills,. producers exhibiting persistent confidence In the future, de spite the Irregularity that is noted In primary markets. “Recent heavy transactions in leath er Improved the tone of the market. New England shoe manufacturers are receiving orders for fall goods from salesmen in the West and South; the demand being chiefly for heavy goods. “Failures this week numbered 213 In the United States, against 266 last year, and 37 In Canada, as compared with 1*6 a year ago.” j/551* Local Cotton Market Hood Middling 1016-10 Low Middling....: lo Demand fair, but on tbe whole spots do not adyanob as rapidly ss contracts. New Orleans, March 24.—Liverpool furnished very little Information to day and the trade generaly came to the conclusion that there was but little newB of Interesting character. Options continued to act incomplete, with a more widely Inspired feeling of buoy ancy which the American rings’have assumed, and the net gain for the day amounted to 5 points over the closing of yesterday. Spot sales were 8,000 bales. The most Important and logical rea son for the strength of today’s mar ket Is undoubtedly to bp found In the marked improvement of the statistical position of cotton. Manipulation, how ever, Is still playing a prominent part, and since outside speculation Is more or less spasmodic it Is probable that any further advance will more likely find Its Inspiration from this latter condition as the receipt of news of n favorable character from the progress being made on the new crop would In all likelihood offset any Influence that might bo occasioned by a marked Im provement In the statistics of the old crop, even though sentiment show fur ther Indications of adhering to the bull side. It Is hardly probable that there has been formulated any well-organ ized plan to push prices materially up ward, and In the due consideration of those facts the wiseBt policy seems for the present to use the long side for scalping operations and to be satisfied with reasonable profits.
